What brooch did Catherine wear at Windsor Castle?
The jewel was described by Vogue and British Vogue as a diamond-and-emerald brooch shaped as three feathers beneath a coronet. Catherine wore it on 17 September 2025 as she greeted the US president and first lady at Windsor Castle.
The reports identify the design with the Prince of Wales’s Feathers badge. The Royal Family’s “Titles and Heraldry” page describes the badge as “three silver (or white) feathers rising through a gold coronet of alternate crosses and fleur-de-lys.” Its description explains the badge’s heraldic form; it does not establish that every detail, including the badge’s colors, is represented in this particular jewel.
Why does the brooch connect to Prince William?
William holds the title Prince of Wales, and the three-feather badge is associated with that title. The Royal Family says its use in royal heraldry dates to the 14th century, when it was used by Edward, Prince of Wales, known as the Black Prince.

The Royal Family also presents the badge’s earliest origin as uncertain. Experts in heraldry believe the Black Prince may have adopted it after the Battle of Crécy in 1346, possibly from the defeated King John of Bohemia. Feathers also appeared in the arms of his mother, Philippa of Hainault. These are described as possibilities, not settled facts.
What is the reported connection to Princess Diana?
Vogue’s 17 September 2025 account says Diana wore the brooch on several occasions after her engagement to Prince Charles, sometimes as a pendant. British Vogue also reported that Queen Camilla had worn it. That reported history gives the piece a personal association with William’s mother as well as a design linked to his title.

The same Vogue reports say the brooch was given to Queen Alexandra by her husband, then Prince of Wales, in 1863. Counting from that reported presentation to Catherine’s 2025 appearance produces the “162-year-old” description used in coverage. It is a reported presentation date, not an independently verified manufacture date in an official catalog record for this specific brooch.
Was Catherine’s choice confirmed as a tribute?
No. The symbolism is understandable: the feathers evoke William’s title, while Diana’s reported wear connects the jewel to his mother. But describing the appearance as a tribute is an interpretation of the brooch’s design and history. There is no confirmation from Catherine or a Palace representative in the cited coverage that this was her reason for choosing it.

Do not confuse it with Queen Alexandra’s Egyptian scarab brooch
The Royal Collection Trust’s biography of Queen Alexandra discusses a different brooch: an Egyptian scarab presented by Edward at the time of their engagement. Its collection record identifies it as RCIN 14645 and dates the scarab to about 700 BC. It is not the Prince of Wales Feathers brooch discussed here.
The distinction matters because the fashion reports’ account of the feathers brooch’s 1863 presentation is not an official Royal Collection Trust object record. The Trust’s scarab entry documents another piece, not the provenance of Catherine’s brooch.
