Life is Strange: Double Exposure makes a thoughtful case for returning to Max Caulfield: years after the original game’s defining choice, she must live with its consequences while facing a new loss. But the sequel’s premise and its creators’ intentions are stronger evidence of an attempted coda than proof that it fully earns one. Reviews find memorable moments alongside uneven emotional depth and an unsatisfying landing.
What Double Exposure is about
Double Exposure is a direct sequel starring Max Caulfield, now a photographer-in-residence at Caledon University. After her friend Safi is murdered, Max discovers a new ability: she can shift between two timelines, one in which Safi is dead and another in which she is alive. She investigates the murder across both realities. The official PlayStation listing describes it as an all-new adventure starring the original game’s protagonist; it is not simply a standalone story borrowing the series name.

The game’s central device is therefore different from the original’s rewind power. Instead of revisiting moments to alter them, Max moves between parallel versions of the present, where Safi’s fate changes what she can learn and encounter.
Does the sequel make one original ending canon?
No. Early in Double Exposure, players choose which outcome of the original game happened in Max’s life. Narrative director Felice Kuan put the approach plainly: “Both endings of the original Life is Strange are canon.” Creative director Jonathan Stauder said, “From that point forward, you’ve determined your canon.”

- DECIDE THE FATE OF CALEDON. Explore two versions of a vivid winter campus, each packed with clues, secrets, and tough decisions.
That choice carries the past forward without making the sequel’s two new timelines alternate versions of the original ending. Stauder clarified that the new split is about Safi being alive or dead: “Nothing with Arcadia Bay.” The distinction matters: players establish their own history for Max, then follow a separate mystery built around her new power. The developers’ explanations appear in interviews with Nintendo Life and GameSpot.
Why bring Max back?
The case for calling the game a coda begins with what the original left unresolved. Stauder described the first game’s defining choice as leaving “a ton to unpack.” He said shifting between timelines gave Max a way to work through the issues left by that choice and offered an opportunity for catharsis. That is the creative rationale, not a guarantee of how the story will land for every player.

It gives the sequel a meaningful foundation. Max’s return is not only a chance to revisit a familiar character; it asks what it means to keep living after a choice that changed her life. Her new investigation brings that question into contact with grief, consequence and the possibility of moving forward. The game makes the original’s ending part of Max’s present without requiring every player to share the same version of it.
Does it work as a coda?
The answer depends on separating intention from execution. Double Exposure clearly aims to revisit the emotional aftermath of the first game, and individual scenes can make that history resonate. But a story can acknowledge an old wound without exploring it deeply enough to make its return feel transformative.

GameSpot praised the visuals, some narrative beats, gameplay variation and endearing characters, while criticizing the story as inconsistent and short on depth. The Guardian reviewer Keza MacDonald likewise praised individual scenes and the way Max and Chloe’s history continues to reverberate, but judged that the story did not come together and that “Double Exposure does not stick the landing.” Those are assessments from two reviews, not a universal verdict. Read them in full at GameSpot and The Guardian.
That tension is why “profound coda” is best treated as a claim to test, not an established consensus. The game’s return to Max and its willingness to carry both original endings forward support the idea. The cited criticism raises a harder question: whether the new mystery gives those themes enough depth, and whether the conclusion makes Max’s emotional journey feel earned.
