José Rizal (1861–1896) was a Filipino doctor, writer, poet, educator, linguist, and inventor whose novels exposed abuses under Spanish colonial rule. Noli Me Tangere (1887) and El Filibusterismo (1891) became central to his legacy and to the study of Philippine nationalism. Rizal advocated nonviolent reform; Spanish colonial authorities charged him with inciting dissent and executed him on December 30, 1896.
Who was José Rizal?
José Rizal was born on June 19, 1861, and executed on December 30, 1896. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines describes him as a doctor, poet, writer, educator, linguist, and inventor. His work addressed the conditions Filipinos faced under Spanish colonial rule, and his life became closely associated with the emergence of Philippine nationhood.
What are Rizal’s most important works?
Noli Me Tangere (1887)
Rizal’s first major novel exposed colonial oppression and abuses in Philippine society. Its title is Latin for “Touch Me Not.” The National Historical Commission of the Philippines dates its publication to 1887.
El Filibusterismo (1891)
Rizal’s second novel continued his critique of colonial rule. The National Historical Commission dates it to 1891 and, like Noli Me Tangere, identifies it as a work that exposed oppression of Filipinos.

Other writings and work
Rizal’s significance was not limited to fiction: the NHCP marker also identifies him as a poet, educator, linguist, and inventor, as well as a doctor and writer. Republic Act No. 1425 refers more broadly to his life, works, and writings, alongside the two novels.
How did Rizal’s writing relate to Philippine nationalism?
Rizal advocated nonviolent struggle for freedom. The NHCP marker says he was charged with inciting dissent and connects his martyrdom with the growth of a sense of nationhood and the 1898 proclamation of Philippine independence. That is the marker’s historical interpretation; it does not mean Rizal’s death alone caused independence. His writing helped make colonial abuses a subject of public discussion, while the later independence movement involved a wider history and many people.
Why are Rizal’s life and works part of school curricula?
Republic Act No. 1425, commonly called the Rizal Law, was approved on June 12, 1956. Section 1 requires courses on Rizal’s life, works, and writings in public and private schools, colleges, and universities, particularly his novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.
For collegiate courses, the law identifies original or unexpurgated editions of the novels, or their English translations, as basic texts. It provides an exemption from that text requirement for students who submit a sworn statement of religious belief; the course requirement remains. The act also directs schools to maintain adequate library copies of the novels, Rizal’s other works, and his biography, and calls for translations into English, Tagalog, and principal Philippine dialects and distribution in popular editions.
Which editions should students read?
Follow the language and edition specified by the course syllabus. The law’s collegiate text provision points to original or unexpurgated editions, or English translations; it does not identify a single current edition as best. Before choosing a book, check whether it is complete or abridged, whether it is in Spanish or translation, and whether its notes and study materials suit the course. If a class assigns a particular translation or edition, use that rather than substituting another.

Rizal is widely recognized as one of the Philippines’ greatest heroes, but the available institutional reference distinguishes that recognition from a specific legal proclamation formally declaring him the national hero. The National Commission for Culture and the Arts’ indexed result makes this distinction; it is best to avoid describing his status as the result of a single formal proclamation without a supporting legal act.
