Jean-Claude Van Damme has said that his film career kept him from seeing his children grow up, a loss he called “Terrible.” Those comments document the father’s regret, not Nicholas’s personal experience.
What Jean-Claude Van Damme has said about being a father
In a 21 August 2018 interview with Le Parisien, Van Damme said that after his film success began in 1986, he moved from one movie to the next and did not see his children grow up. Asked whether that had marked him, he answered, “Terrible,” and reflected on not having known how to love his daughter. The interview supports reporting his regret about his parenting; it does not describe Nicholas’s individual childhood.

A 2021 TF1 Info report recounting Van Damme’s appearance on Sept à Huit says he described difficulty telling his three children “I love you.” He said he had recently managed to say it and that it changed things with them. This, too, is Van Damme’s account of his relationship with his children, rather than a statement from Nicholas.
What is known about Nicholas—and what is not
Le Parisien identifies Bianca, Kristopher and Nicholas as Van Damme’s children. The actor’s official European biography lists Nicolas, born in 1995, among his three children. The spelling varies between these sources; neither source provides evidence about the quality or effects of Nicholas’s childhood.

The accounts cited here do not establish that Nicholas called his childhood traumatic, nor that his father’s past caused him trauma. That is a stronger claim than Van Damme’s remarks about absence and regret can support. Nicholas’s own perspective remains unestablished in these sources.
Why his father’s childhood is a separate story
A 1991 Washington Post profile describes Van Damme as a frail child and says his father enrolled him in karate. This is context about the actor’s upbringing, not evidence about what Nicholas experienced. It should not be used to infer a cause or diagnosis for Van Damme’s son.

How to read the headline’s claim
- Supported: Van Damme has said that his career meant he did not see his children grow up, and he has expressed regret about that absence.
- Not established here: Nicholas’s own account of his childhood, whether he considers it traumatic, or whether he links any harm to his father’s past.
Until a reliable first-person account from Nicholas supports those claims, “traumatic childhood because of his dad’s past” should be treated as an unverified premise, not a fact.
