Rowling responded to Emma Watson’s comments about their relationship on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast. Rowling wrote that Watson was “ignorant of how ignorant she is,” linking that judgment to her view of Watson’s experience outside wealth and fame and to their earlier disagreement over transgender rights. The exchange documents an ongoing public disagreement, not a reconciliation.
What did Rowling say about Watson?
In a lengthy post on X, Rowling wrote: “Like other people who’ve never experienced adult life uncushioned by wealth and fame, Emma has so little experience of real life she’s ignorant of how ignorant she is.” The full sentence matters: “ignorant” was part of a broader criticism of Watson’s life experience, rather than a standalone description.
Rowling opened by saying, “I’m not owed eternal agreement from any actor who once played a character I created.” She also said Watson and her former co-stars were entitled to their views and should not face threats, violence, or loss of work because of them. At the same time, Rowling criticized Watson’s public comments and characterized them as harmful to women’s rights. Those are Rowling’s claims and interpretations, not independently established findings. The J.K. Rowling Index preserves the post’s full text as an archive; it says it is not associated with Rowling or the Harry Potter rights holders. The archive’s Emma Watson entry identifies the original X post.
What prompted the response?
Shortly before Rowling’s post, Watson discussed their strained relationship on Jay Shetty’s podcast. The Guardian reported Watson saying she hoped people with differing views could continue to love one another, and that she still treasured Rowling and the person she had known. As the Guardian quoted her: “I really don’t believe that … holding the love and support and views that I have, mean[s] that I can’t and don’t treasure Jo and the person that I had personal experiences with.” This wording is reported through the newspaper, not verified here against a full podcast transcript.

Watson’s reported point was that disagreement over views did not erase her personal affection for Rowling. Rowling’s response rejected the idea that her former actor’s affection or past connection required her agreement, then moved into criticism of Watson’s experience and public advocacy. The Guardian’s September 29, 2025 report and TheWrap’s account of the exchange describe the timing and reported context.

The wider disagreement over transgender rights
The exchange took place against the background of Rowling’s gender-critical views and Watson’s public support for transgender people. The Guardian reported that Watson, Daniel Radcliffe, and Rupert Grint had previously taken issue with Rowling’s beliefs. Rowling’s post criticized Watson’s public position and interpreted it as damaging to women’s rights; that characterization belongs to Rowling, rather than being a neutral description of the dispute.

Watson’s 2022 BAFTA remark and a handwritten note
Rowling recalled Watson saying “I’m here for all of the witches” at the 2022 BAFTA film awards, describing the remark as a turning point in how she felt about Watson. Rowling also referred to a handwritten note Watson sent after the speech and said it did not reassure her. These details explain Rowling’s own account of the relationship’s deterioration; they do not independently establish Watson’s intent or what the note meant to either person.
