The studio said the posts were indefensible and inconsistent with its values. Gunn apologized for the remarks, members of the film’s cast publicly supported him, and Disney reinstated him as writer-director in March 2019.
Why did Disney fire James Gunn?
The tweets at issue dated from 2008 to 2011 and included offensive jokes about rape and pedophilia, among other subjects. Disney’s public explanation came from Alan Horn, then chairman of Walt Disney Studios. In a statement reported by CBS News on July 20, 2018, Horn said: “The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him.”

That statement establishes Disney’s stated rationale: the studio judged the remarks incompatible with its values and ended its business relationship with Gunn. It does not, by itself, settle every possible explanation for the decision.
How did Gunn respond?
Gunn said the remarks were failed attempts to provoke and expressed regret. In his public statement on July 20, he wrote: “My words of nearly a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative.” He also said, “Regardless of how much time has passed, I understand and accept the business decisions taken today.” CBS News reported the firing and Gunn’s response.

How did the Guardians cast react?
Nine cast members published an open letter supporting Gunn on July 30, 2018. The letter said, “We fully support James Gunn,” and criticized the process of judging someone in public, saying, “There is little due process in the court of public opinion,” according to The Guardian.

Yes. On March 15, 2019, Disney and Gunn’s representatives confirmed that he had been reinstated as writer-director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, as The Guardian reported. The firing was therefore not the final outcome: Disney later brought him back to lead the film.
At the time of the 2018 firing, contemporaneous reporting said Gunn had not been formally confirmed as the third film’s director. The situation should not be described as Disney removing him from a role that had already been formally confirmed. The first two films’ reported box-office grosses—$773 million for the original and $863 million for Vol. 2—were cited by The Guardian in 2018, but those historical figures do not explain Disney’s decision.
