James Darren, the actor and singer who first became famous as Moondoggie in Gidget and later played Vic Fontaine on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, died on September 2, 2024, at age 88. His career moved from teen-idol films and hit records to television acting and directing, before introducing him to a new generation of science-fiction fans.

When did James Darren die?

Darren died on September 2, 2024, aged 88. The Television Academy records that date as his passing, and StarTrek.com reported his age. He was born James William Ercolani in Philadelphia on June 8, 1936. The Television Academy’s biography records his birth and passing dates; StarTrek.com identifies his birth name and birthplace.

CBS News, citing his son Jim Moret, reported that Darren died in his sleep at a Los Angeles hospital. Moret said Darren had been admitted the previous week for an aortic valve replacement but could not undergo it then, and was taken back to the hospital on Sunday. The Washington Post also reported a recent aortic valve problem, citing a statement on Darren’s website. These accounts describe a medical issue and his final hospitalization, but do not establish a definitive cause of death.

What made James Darren famous?

Moondoggie in Gidget

Darren’s breakthrough came in the 1959 film Gidget, in which he played surfer and singer Moondoggie opposite Sandra Dee. He reprised the role in Gidget Goes Hawaiian (1961) and Gidget Goes to Rome (1963), becoming closely associated with the youthful beach-film image that made him a teen idol. CBS News’ obituary recounts that Columbia had him under contract; in a 2004 Entertainment Weekly interview quoted by CBS, Darren joked, “They had me under contract; I was a prisoner,” then added, “But with those lovely young ladies, it was the best prison I think I’ll ever be in.”

Pop recordings

Darren also built a career as a recording artist. “Goodbye Cruel World” became a hit in 1961, and CBS News reports that it and “Her Royal Majesty” both reached the Billboard Hot 100’s top ten. His music career ran alongside his screen work rather than serving only as an extension of his film persona.

Who did James Darren play on Deep Space Nine?

Darren played Vic Fontaine, a lounge singer in a holoprogram at Quark’s, in seven episodes across the final two seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. The character let Darren bring his singing and old-school entertainer’s presence into the science-fiction series. StarTrek.com’s 2024 retrospective quotes Darren describing the role as “a dream come true for me” and “one of the most enjoyable roles for me to have played.”

William Shatner, in a tribute quoted by StarTrek.com, remembered Darren as “so talented; so loving” and said, “The world is less because of his loss.”

His television career extended beyond acting

After his early film success, Darren worked steadily in television. He played Officer James Corrigan on T.J. Hooker and also directed episodes of several series, including The A-Team, Walker, Texas Ranger, Beverly Hills, 90210, and Melrose Place. That range—performer, recording artist, television actor, and director—makes his career broader than either his teen-idol image or his later Star Trek role alone.
