The Sound of Music is based on the real von Trapp family and Maria von Trapp’s memoir, but it is a heavily dramatized account, not a documentary. Maria arrived in 1926 to tutor one child, married Georg in 1927, and the family later left Austria by train—not on foot over the Alps. The film also changed family details, characterizations, songs and locations.
Was Maria really a governess?
Not in the way the film suggests. Maria arrived at the von Trapp home in 1926 to tutor Georg’s daughter Maria, whose health affected her ability to attend school. She was not initially hired to govern all seven children.
The film also compresses the relationship’s chronology. Maria and Georg married in 1927, eleven years before the family left Austria. In her own recollection, quoted by National Archives archivist Joan Gearin, Maria said of Georg: “I really and truly was not in love. I liked him but didn’t love him.” She recalled falling in love with the children, rather than with their father. Gearin’s account draws on Maria’s books, contemporary newspapers and original documents; it describes the film as generally based on the first section of Maria’s 1949 memoir, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers.
Was Captain von Trapp really that strict?
The stern, music-opposed father in the film is not how Georg was remembered by his children. The National Archives account describes him as warm and music-loving, and the von Trapp family’s own FAQ says he was loving, attentive and gentle. Those character judgments come from family recollection, not a complete record of private family life, but they sharply contrast with the screen portrayal.

The difference mattered to the family. The National Archives reports that Georg’s children were hurt by the film’s depiction. Johannes von Trapp, speaking in a 1998 New York Times interview quoted by Gearin, said the film “simplifies everything” and that reality was “less glamorous but more interesting than the myth.”
How many von Trapp children were there?
Georg had seven children with his first wife. Maria and Georg later had three more, so the family ultimately included ten children. The film focuses on seven and changes their names and birth order, as the National Archives and family FAQ note.

Did the von Trapps really escape over the Alps?
No. The family left Austria by train, rather than hiking over the Alps as the film’s dramatic ending suggests. The family FAQ says professional performances abroad enabled their departure to Italy. Salzburg’s tourism overview describes travel via Italy and England to the United States, but that summary should not be taken as a fully documented itinerary for every leg.
The real departure also differed from the film’s escape during a Salzburg singing competition. The contrast is not just a matter of scenery: the movie shapes the family’s exit into a tense, single climax, whereas the historical account describes departure by train and professional activity abroad.

Did the real family sing “Do-Re-Mi” and “Edelweiss”?
Those songs belong to the musical, not to the family’s original repertoire. Salzburg’s history overview says “Do-Re-Mi” and “Edelweiss” were written for the production. The real Trapp singers performed mainly classical and sacred music; the signature film songs were not the soundtrack to their real-life departure.
Was the wedding filmed at the real church?
The wedding scene was filmed at the church in Mondsee, but that is not where Maria and Georg’s real wedding took place. Salzburg’s account identifies Nonnberg Abbey as Maria’s religious home and the historical wedding location. The film’s use of Mondsee is a location choice, not evidence that the ceremony happened there. Tourismus Salzburg’s guide to the Trapp family offers visitor context for the city’s association with the family.

What the film preserves—and what it changes
The film retains the broad foundation: Maria, Georg, the family’s music and their departure from Austria. It reshapes the history into a streamlined love story and escape drama, altering the chronology, household details, family characterization, repertoire and geography. The distinction matters because a true family and memoir inspired the musical, but the familiar scenes should not be treated as a scene-by-scene historical record.
