Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has said the X-Men are coming after Avengers: Secret Wars, placing the film in the franchise’s post-Secret Wars direction. The available announcements do not establish that it will be the first Marvel Studios film of any kind released after Secret Wars.
When does the MCU X-Men movie come out?
Disney has scheduled the untitled X-Men film for theaters on May 5, 2028. The official announcement identifies Jake Schreier as director. Disney’s D23 announcement does not provide a plot synopsis or name a final title.
For context, Disney lists Avengers: Doomsday for December 18, 2026, in its official film listing. That release date alone does not establish the complete order of Marvel Studios films between Doomsday, Secret Wars and the X-Men movie.
Why is it described as coming after Secret Wars?
Feige has framed Secret Wars as a transition point: he said it completes stories begun after Avengers: Endgame while also setting Marvel up for what comes next. In an interview reported by Variety Australia, he described Marvel’s thinking in terms of a “reset” and a “singular timeline,” adding that “‘X-Men’ is where that will happen next.” He also said, “‘Endgame,’ literally, was about endings. ‘Secret Wars’ is about is about beginnings.” The repeated words appear in the published transcript.

Feige’s remarks support describing the X-Men as part of Marvel’s post-Secret Wars future. They do not, by themselves, establish that this is the first Marvel Studios theatrical release after Secret Wars, or explain exactly how the reset will work on screen.

Is this a reboot, and will it adapt a specific comic?
“Reboot” is a label used by AP in its headline and report, but it does not fully describe what Marvel has confirmed. Feige has called “reboot” a scary word while discussing a reset and a singular timeline. The evidence supports a new post-Secret Wars direction; it does not spell out the film’s continuity mechanics or confirm that it adapts a particular comic storyline.

No plot synopsis, trailer or full production schedule is established in the cited announcements and reporting. Feige has described the X-Men’s appeal in terms of young people who “feel different and who feel Other and who feel like they don’t belong.” That is thematic context, not a confirmed plot description.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should the new film be understood alongside the Fox X-Men movies?
Feige has said future X-Men roles will be recast, so the announced MCU cast should not be treated as a continuation of the Fox films’ cast. The confirmed release date and the stated post-Secret Wars reset provide the clearest points of distinction so far. A detailed story or continuity comparison is not possible without a synopsis or further film details.
