Lynne McGranger filmed her final scene as Irene Roberts on 26 March 2025 at Seven’s Eveleigh Studios in Sydney. Her character’s farewell came later: 7NEWS reported that Irene’s final scenes aired on 19 August 2025. McGranger had played Irene since 1993, for nearly 33 years.

When McGranger filmed her final scene

McGranger’s last scene was filmed on the Pier Diner set, a familiar location in the long-running Australian soap. Cast and crew gathered to watch the farewell. Producer Lucy Addario presented McGranger with flowers, and she received a “Hamburger Phone” as a nod to the diner’s history, according to 7NEWS.

At the gathering, McGranger said: “I’ve had the ride of my life. And I love each and every one of you so much.” 7NEWS also reported that she thanked the cast, art department, writers and crew.

When Irene’s final scenes aired

The filming farewell and Irene’s on-screen departure were separate events. McGranger wrapped production in March, but the character remained in the continuing exit storyline. On 19 August 2025, 7NEWS reported that Irene’s final scenes were airing that day: 7NEWS coverage.

In the August storyline, Irene was in decline after a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. That diagnosis belonged to the fictional character’s plot, not to McGranger. The actor said she was proud of the storyline as well as other arcs she had played.

A role spanning nearly 33 years

McGranger began playing Irene in 1993. When her departure was announced in February 2025, the ABC said she planned to film her exit in March and that Irene would leave the screen later in 2025. The ABC’s account distinguishes the production timeline from the broadcast exit: ABC News.

Reflecting on the decision, McGranger said: “After almost 33 years in my dream role and working everyday with people who I love, respect and whom I now consider family, it’s bittersweet to be closing the chapter on what has been the best and longest gig of my life.”

Home and Away executive producer Julie McGauran credited McGranger’s portrayal with giving Irene her enduring appeal: “Lynne’s extraordinary portrayal of down-to-earth Irene Roberts is why the character is held with such great affection by fans around the world.”

Why Irene resonated with viewers

McGranger described Irene as a character with flaws as well as warmth: “Irene does dumb stuff. She’s quick to anger. Yet, she’s also quick to forgive.” That mixture helped make the character’s departure a significant moment for the show and its longtime audience.

The ABC reported in 2025 that Home and Away had been sold to more than 145 countries and generated more than $1 billion in revenue since its 1988 debut. Those are figures reported by the ABC; they provide context for the series’ international reach, rather than a measure of Irene’s individual popularity.
