Look, and Then Look Again: Films About Lookalikes and Identity Swaps

Twins trading places, strangers mistaken for one another and doubles that unsettle identity: these films show how differently movies can use resemblance.

Films about people who look alike split into very different kinds of stories: twins may deliberately trade places, strangers may be mistaken for one another, or a double may unsettle someone’s grip on identity and reality. The best way to choose one is to look at how the resemblance works—and what is at stake when others see the wrong person.

For light, deliberate identity swaps

In these stories, resemblance is a tool the characters knowingly use. The switch is planned, and its consequences tend to drive comedy, family drama or adventure.

The Parent Trap (1961 and 1998)

Both Disney films follow identical twins who meet at summer camp, discover their connection and switch places in hopes of bringing their parents back together. The 1998 version updates the premise, while the 1961 film tells the same broad twin-swap story. Disney’s descriptions cover the 1961 film and the 1998 film.

It Takes Two

Here, the identity swap is part of a matchmaking plan rather than a reunion between twins. Paramount’s synopsis describes two girls trading identities to bring Roger and Diana closer. The setup makes the resemblance a means to influence what two adults believe and how they act. Paramount’s film page outlines the premise.

The Prince and the Pauper (2008)

Sony’s description centers on two boys who look exactly alike and trade places. Once the exchange begins, people around them mistake which boy they are dealing with. The story uses resemblance for a deliberate adventure, while the resulting confusion spreads beyond the boys’ original plan. Sony’s film page describes the swap.

When resemblance creates mistaken identity

A lookalike story does not always involve a planned exchange. In The Prince and the Pauper, the boys choose to trade places, but other people’s mistaken assumptions are part of the fallout. That distinction matters: a character can be confused with someone else even when no one has engineered the mix-up.

For a more unsettling version, Enemy (2014) begins when Adam Bell spots an actor who looks physically identical to him in a movie and tries to track him down. The similarity is not introduced as a family resemblance or a comic disguise; it becomes the film’s central mystery. A24’s official synopsis describes Adam’s discovery and search.

For doubles that unsettle identity

The Double

Richard Ayoade’s The Double turns the familiar face into a threat to the protagonist’s place in the world. The British Board of Film Classification describes a man whose life is being taken over by an exact physical double with a different personality, and identifies the film as an interpretation of Dostoevsky’s novella. The double is not simply someone to impersonate: his arrival raises questions about individuality and control. See the BBFC film entry.

Vertigo (1958)

Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo can be read as an apparent-double story, but it is not a straightforward tale of two physically identical women. The British Film Institute explains that Scottie treats a woman as though she were someone else; as the BFI puts it, “Where Vertigo differs from other treatments of ‘doubles’ is that only one woman (Kim Novak) is actually involved – but for much of the running time Scottie is convinced otherwise.” That distinction makes the film’s double less a second person than an identity Scottie imposes. Read the BFI’s discussion of doubles in Vertigo.

How to choose a lookalike film

Start with the kind of confusion you want to watch, rather than treating every example as the same trope.
