The headline description “flipped over” reflects a witness’s account of a yacht appearing vertical in the water; contemporaneous reports did not establish that the vessel literally capsized.
What happened to the yacht near Miami Beach?
The incident happened on Saturday, May 3, 2025, near Monument Island off Miami Beach. The Associated Press reported that the yacht began taking on water. The Miami Herald identified it as TNT, a Tecnomar Lamborghini 63, and described it as going down in shallow water.
Witness Rachel Miller told the Associated Press: “We saw, like, a bunch of cop boats, like police boats, and there was another yacht that was flipped over, completely vertical in the water,” the AP reported. That is a witness description, not an official finding that the vessel overturned. The reports establish that it took on water and went down; they do not establish the precise mechanical sequence.
Were the people aboard rescued?
Yes. Authorities rescued all 32 people aboard. The Coast Guard, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and local police marine patrol units responded. The passengers were brought to Miami Beach Marina and checked by Miami Beach Fire Rescue, according to the Associated Press.

How many people was the yacht listed to carry?
The Miami Herald reported that a YachtWorld sale listing for TNT stated a maximum capacity of 12 people. With 32 aboard, that is 20 more than the listing figure. This is a comparison with the capacity stated in a sale listing, not by itself a definitive determination of the vessel’s legal passenger limit. The Miami Herald’s report attributes the figure to that listing.
What caused the yacht to take on water?
The cause was not established in the contemporaneous reports. The Associated Press said it was unknown, and the Miami Herald reported on May 6, 2025, that the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission was investigating. The reported passenger count and listing capacity show a discrepancy; they do not establish that the number of people aboard caused the water ingress. The cited reports do not verify a final investigative finding.

What does this incident say about boating safety?
It does not establish whether anyone aboard had a life jacket, whether one was worn, or whether life jackets would have changed the outcome. Separate nationwide statistics offer context, not an explanation of this incident: for calendar year 2024, the U.S. Coast Guard Boating Safety Division reported that 76% of fatal boating-incident victims drowned when cause of death was known. Among drowning victims whose life-jacket use was reported, 87% were not wearing one. The Coast Guard’s 2025 report presents those 2024 figures.
The Coast Guard says federal law generally requires a Coast Guard-approved, wearable, serviceable life jacket of the appropriate size for each person aboard a recreational vessel, and recommends wearing one while underway. Its guidance advises choosing a jacket suited to the activity and wearer, checking that it is serviceable, and keeping it readily accessible. Requirements can depend on the vessel and location, so consult the applicable rules rather than treating this general guidance as a legal determination for a specific trip.
