Rose Glass’s Love Lies Bleeding is worth watching if you want a crime romance with sweat, desire and grotesque excess—not a tidy procedural. Kristen Stewart and Katy M. O’Brian give its volatile relationship a compelling center; whether the film’s increasingly extreme final act feels thrilling or overextended is the main point of disagreement.
What is Love Lies Bleeding about?
Released in 2024 and directed by Rose Glass, the film follows Lou (Kristen Stewart), a reclusive gym manager, and Jackie (Katy M. O’Brian), an ambitious bodybuilder passing through town on her way to Las Vegas. Their romance becomes entangled with violence connected to Lou’s criminal family. Ed Harris is also among the featured cast. A24’s official synopsis gives the premise; the film is set in the American Southwest in the 1980s, with Albuquerque identified as its setting in the Los Angeles Times review.

The setup makes crime part of the pressure on the couple, but the film’s interest is not in solving a case. It is a stylized, erotic noir about desire and danger that keeps pushing its characters into a more feverish register.
What kind of film should you expect?
Expect a lurid crime romance with pulpy energy, erotic-noir atmosphere and body-horror edges. It is not a restrained crime procedural, and its violence is part of the film’s heightened style rather than a promise of realism. Glass told the Associated Press, “I wanted to make something kind of fun and sweaty and violent.” That aim helps explain why the film can feel gleefully excessive even when its story turns grim.

The title’s “gnarliest crime story” hook captures the violence and physical extremity, but it leaves out the romance that gives those shocks their emotional stakes. The film’s volatile world is better approached as stylized pulp than as a realistic account of criminal life.
What works—and where the film divides viewers
Stewart and O’Brian give the romance its force
The performances are a central strength in several published responses. RogerEbert.com praises both Stewart and O’Brian in a review that calls the film “a sexy, brutal, violent, kinetic piece of filmmaking.” Their presence gives the movie a human center as it veers toward the extreme.

The audacity is also the risk
Glass’s kinetic direction and the film’s willingness to take pulpy risks are part of its appeal, but they do not guarantee that every escalation will land. BFI Sight and Sound finds the journey disjointed but the endpoint compelling. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus likewise praises the pulp and acting while noting that the late risks will not work for everyone. RogerEbert.com also cautions that the final-act explosions may be too much for some viewers.
That tension is the fairest way to approach the film: its extremes can be exhilarating, but the story’s escalation may feel less coherent than its performances and style. If you need crime plotting to remain tightly controlled, the last stretch may test your patience. If you enjoy movies that take a sharp turn rather than retreat to convention, the same quality may be the point.

Is Love Lies Bleeding worth watching?
Yes, if you are drawn to audacious, performance-led crime cinema and can enjoy a story that grows stranger and more physically extreme as it goes. Stewart and O’Brian’s performances, the erotic-noir mood and Glass’s stylistic nerve are the strongest reasons to watch. It is a less certain recommendation for viewers who want procedural logic or a measured, realistic crime drama.
