Those are the film’s and distributor’s framings of the story, not a complete history of the Beach Boys or an independent clinical account of Wilson’s life.

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) notes that the film does not endorse or promote drug use; it depicts drug use as one of several factors in Wilson’s later mental-health struggles. The film should not be treated as a diagnosis or as verification of every event it dramatizes.
Why are there two actors playing Brian Wilson?
Love & Mercy interweaves two key periods, so it uses separate performers for Wilson at different ages. The official production-company page identifies Paul Dano as the young Wilson and John Cusack as the middle-aged Wilson. The split chronology lets the film place his 1960s creative period alongside his later 1980s story instead of presenting his life as a single uninterrupted timeline.

Is Love & Mercy based on a true story?
It is a biographical drama about the real musician Brian Wilson. That describes its subject, but it does not establish that every scene or episode is exact history. The available film and classification descriptions identify the periods and themes the movie depicts; they do not independently verify each dramatized event or provide a full account of Wilson’s treatment and diagnoses.

Release details, music, and recognition
Roadside Attractions lists Love & Mercy as a 2014 production with a runtime of 2 hours and 1 minute. The official film site said Roadside Attractions would release it on June 5, 2015. The production-year listing and the stated release date refer to different things.
The Golden Globes lists the film and its credited cast and songwriters for “One Kind of Love.” John Wells Productions reports two Golden Globe nominations: Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture for Paul Dano and Best Original Song for “One Kind of Love.”
