That contrast gives the premiere a clear hook, but the available episode information does not establish that the opener makes its intelligence-story premise feel distinctive. It is a high-stakes launch; whether it is a special one is harder to demonstrate.
What “Beware the Old Soldier” sets up
Paramount+ lists “Beware the Old Soldier” as season 2, episode 1, dated October 27, 2024. The second episode, “I Love My Country,” arrived on the same date, making the season’s launch a two-episode premiere. Paramount’s announcement specified Paramount+ in the U.S. and international markets where the service is available.

The series’ official description says: “Lioness follows a Marine recruited to befriend the daughter of a terrorist to bring the organization down from within.” The premiere’s available synopsis instead centers on Joe, Kyle, and the QRF team extracting a high-ranking government official kidnapped by a cartel. Those are related worlds of covert operations and military response, but they are not the same dramatic engine: one is an undercover relationship, the other an urgent rescue.
Does the opener make the series feel distinctive?
The extraction is an efficient season-opening problem: a kidnapped official gives the team an immediate objective and puts operational competence under pressure. But a crisis alone does not distinguish Lioness from other action dramas. The series’ more unusual promise lies in the undercover assignment and the human relationship at its center. The premiere’s documented setup foregrounds a different kind of operation, so the larger question is whether the season’s action serves that premise or temporarily displaces it.

That distinction matters when assessing the show’s “special ops” identity. An extraction can supply urgency and spectacle, but it does not by itself make the intelligence story feel specific or persuasive. The strongest case for the series depends on character choices and the consequences of operating undercover—not simply on the presence of a crisis-response team.
The spectacle-versus-storytelling question
A December 2024 essay in The Atlantic treated Lioness as spectacle-driven television, criticizing its plot coherence, character work, and dialogue while also recognizing the entertainment value of its action and star performances. That is a useful lens for the series, not a scene-by-scene verdict on “Beware the Old Soldier.” It would be a mistake to turn a season-level criticism into a claim about every beat of this premiere.
For this opener, the useful test is whether its rescue setup does more than create forward momentum: does it reveal character, sharpen the show’s intelligence premise, or make the operation feel consequential? The published episode synopsis establishes the mission, but not enough detail to answer those questions confidently. On that evidence, the episode’s premise is legible and propulsive; its distinctiveness is not established.

Paramount announced Zoe Saldaña, Laysla De Oliveira, Genesis Rodriguez, and Michael Kelly among the season’s stars, alongside Morgan Freeman and Nicole Kidman. Saldaña and Kidman are also executive producers. That is a substantial ensemble, but recognizable names cannot substitute for the show’s harder task: making its characters and covert-work premise matter beyond the mechanics of the current mission.
The season 2 announcement uses the title Lioness; Paramount’s renewal announcement had called the first season Special Ops: Lioness. The title change is worth noting, but it does not resolve the series’ identity question. The opener begins with a conventional rescue objective, while the official series description promises a more specific undercover operation.
Verdict
“Beware the Old Soldier” gives season 2 a clear, urgent launch, but the available evidence supports a measured verdict rather than a sweeping takedown or endorsement. Its immediate setup is a cartel extraction, not the undercover relationship at the heart of Paramount’s series description. The broader criticism that Lioness can favor spectacle over coherent storytelling is relevant context, but it should not be mistaken for episode-specific proof. The premiere’s mission sounds familiar; whether the show makes it compellingly its own depends on character and story details not established by the synopsis.
