Jack Fowler said he suffered a severe allergic reaction aboard an Emirates flight from London to Dubai after being served a chicken curry he believed contained cashews. Emirates expressed regret after the incident was reported, but said it cannot guarantee a nut-free cabin. The details of what happened during meal selection and service remain Fowler’s account, not an independently established finding.
What Jack Fowler said happened on the flight
Fowler, known for appearing on Love Island, told ITV News that he had been allergic to nuts since childhood and had informed cabin crew about his allergy. He said he was served chicken curry containing cashew nuts, then felt his throat closing and had difficulty breathing. ITV quoted him saying, “I can’t believe it happened. I’m allergic to nuts and I have been since I was seven.” ITV News reported his account on 19 June 2024.
Follow-up coverage said Fowler used his epinephrine auto-injector and received five tanks of oxygen. Those details, too, were reported as part of his account; the available reporting does not establish them through medical records or an independent investigation. Sky News covered the incident.
What Emirates said—and what it did not establish
On 19 June 2024, Emirates told ITV it was sorry to hear about Fowler’s experience and said its teams on the ground were providing assistance. The airline said it offers special meals for medical, dietary and religious requirements, but added: “we cannot guarantee a nut-free in-flight environment.”

That response states the airline’s position on cabin conditions; it does not independently resolve whether Fowler’s meal contained cashews, how his allergy information was handled, or what occurred during service. Fowler called for nuts to be removed from airline menus. That is his response to the incident, rather than a conclusion established by the available evidence.
Can Emirates guarantee a nut-free flight?
No. Emirates’ current food-allergy policy says the airline serves nuts and foods containing allergens on all flights and cannot guarantee an allergen-free cabin. Other passengers may bring allergenic foods aboard, and special meals are prepared in facilities that handle allergens, so the airline also cannot guarantee meals are free of allergens or traces.

Emirates says it will not make in-flight allergy announcements unless applicable law requires it. A dietary meal request is therefore not the same as an allergen-free meal or a guarantee that other passengers will not bring nuts aboard.
What the evidence says about nut allergies and flying
A 2024 review published by the BMJ reported that food-induced allergic reactions were around 10–100 times less common during flights than on the ground, drawing on a cited meta-analysis. The review cautioned that this comparison may partly reflect precautions—such as avoiding air travel or bringing personal food—taken by people with allergies. It does not establish that flying is safe for any particular passenger. Read the review in the BMJ.

The review found no evidence from the studies it examined, including aircraft simulations, that nut allergens are likely to travel through aircraft ventilation and cause reactions. That does not rule out exposure from food or contaminated surfaces. The review identifies wiping down the passenger’s seating area as the most effective preventive measure discussed.
The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) also emphasizes cleaning tray tables and seat-back entertainment screens. It notes that preboarding could give a passenger time to clean before settling in. The report says it is uncertain whether asking nearby passengers to avoid nuts—a buffer-zone approach—reduces the actual risk of a reaction, though such a request may reassure some travelers. How to prepare for a flight with a food allergy
Airline policies differ, so check the policy of the carrier operating each leg of the trip. Official guidance supports planning ahead, keeping prescribed medication accessible and considering suitable personal food. For individual decisions about travel or an allergy action plan, consult your clinician.
- Contact the airline early. GOV.UK advises passengers to disclose food allergies as early as possible, preferably when booking. Tell gate staff about a severe allergy as well. Check what the airline offers and what it does not promise: a special meal, announcement, or advance notice may not mean an allergen-free environment.
- Check meal arrangements and deadlines. Emirates allows eligible dietary meals to be requested through Manage Your Booking up to 24 hours before departure. Its policy does not describe these meals as allergen-free. Confirm current arrangements directly with the airline before travel.
- Keep prescribed medication accessible. GOV.UK advises carrying medication in hand luggage. The CAA advises passengers at risk of anaphylaxis to carry their prescribed adrenaline auto-injectors and know how to use them. Follow your clinician’s advice for your own needs.
- Consider bringing appropriate food. Emirates and GOV.UK advise considering personal food; Emirates says it should require no refrigeration, heating or special handling. Check the airline’s current rules and any applicable travel restrictions.
- Clean the seating area. The CAA and the 2024 review support wiping the tray table and seat-back screen to address possible surface contamination. Cleaning can reduce contact with contaminated surfaces, but cannot make the cabin allergen-free or replace prescribed medication.
Emirates’ current policy also says passengers should discuss travel and an allergy action plan with their doctor and inform the airline in advance about severe allergies. Its special meals can be booked through Manage Your Booking up to 24 hours before departure; availability and current procedures should be confirmed with Emirates.
