Two striking examples in that edition’s coverage were Shridhar Chillal’s record for the longest fingernails on a single hand and Nilanshi Patel’s record for the longest hair on a teenager. Their measurements belong to different categories and were taken years apart.
What did “80 Guinness World Records” mean?
In October 2019, Press Trust of India reported that Penguin Random House had announced 80 record-breaking achievements by Indians in the Guinness World Records 2020 edition. The number describes that annual book’s reported contents; it is not a live national count or a claim that India currently holds exactly 80 records. NDTV’s syndicated PTI report noted it had not been edited by NDTV staff apart from its headline.

Two Indian records, two different measurements

The figures describe different things: Chillal’s measurement adds together five nails on one hand, while Patel’s is the length of a teenager’s hair. They should not be treated as directly comparable records. Guinness World Records documents the measurements in its profiles of Patel and Chillal.

How the record changed
Guinness first measured Patel’s hair at 170.5 cm in 2018, when she was 16. By 22 September 2019, the measurement had reached 190 cm. Guinness reported that she set a later mark of 200 cm on 29 July 2020, shortly before her 18th birthday. The 2019 measurement is the one closest to the announcement of the 2020 book; 200 cm is her later final teenage measurement reported by Guinness.

Why she grew it
Patel said she stopped cutting her hair after a bad haircut when she was six: “I got my hair cut, a really bad haircut. So, then I decided that I won’t cut my hair. I decided that when I was six and have not cut it since,” she told Guinness World Records.
What happened after the record
In 2021, Patel cut her hair after growing it from age six. That later cut is part of the story, but it does not change the historical record measurements made while she was a teenager.

Shridhar Chillal’s longest fingernails on one hand
Guinness measured the five fingernails on Chillal’s left hand at a combined 909.6 cm (358.1 in) on 17 November 2014. He had begun growing them in 1952. Guinness reported that the nails were cut in 2018 at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! in Times Square.
The length affected ordinary activities, including sleep. Chillal told Guinness: “I can’t move much, so every half an hour or so I wake up and move my hand to the other side of the bed.”

- Keep the edition in view: 80 is the number attributed to Penguin Random House’s announcement for the Guinness World Records 2020 book, as reported in October 2019.
- Keep the dates attached to the measurements: Patel’s 170.5 cm mark was recorded in 2018, her hair measured 190 cm in September 2019 and 200 cm in July 2020; Chillal’s aggregate nail length was measured in November 2014.
- Keep the categories distinct: five nails measured together on one hand and one teenager’s hair length are separate record categories, not a like-for-like contest.
