Magda Szubanski accepted the 2025 TV WEEK Logies Hall of Fame honour by video, joking about her pyjamas before making one point unmistakable: the award recognised 40 years of work, not her cancer diagnosis. She thanked her loved ones and the Australian public for their support. At the time, she was receiving treatment; later reports in 2026 said she had completed chemotherapy and was in remission—not cured.
What happened at the 2025 Logies?
The 65th TV WEEK Logie Awards ceremony was held on 3 August 2025. Szubanski, an inductee into the Logies Hall of Fame, sent a recorded acceptance message rather than attending in person. The Australian Women’s Weekly reproduced the longer version of her speech, while PerthNow reported on the response in the room. PerthNow described the message as moving attendees; that is the outlet’s characterization, not a measured account of every person’s reaction.
ABC News reported that Szubanski had won seven Logies and was the fifth woman inducted into the Hall of Fame in more than 40 years. The award placed her long career in the foreground, even as her health was part of the circumstances surrounding the ceremony.
What did Magda Szubanski say in her Logies speech?
She opened with a joke, then explained her absence
Szubanski began by saying she normally skipped the event because she could not be bothered getting out of her pyjamas, then added that “this time, there really is a reason.” The joke gave way to a more serious explanation of what the honour meant to her. The Australian Women’s Weekly reproduced the line in its account of her recorded message.

“I have not been awarded this honour because I have the cancer,” she said, adding that it was for “40 years of hard work.” The distinction mattered: she did not want the Hall of Fame recognition reduced to a response to her illness. She also praised the Australian television industry and thanked those who selected her.
She thanked friends, family and the public
Szubanski thanked her family and friends, singling out Kristin as “an absolute rock.” She described the support she had felt from the Australian public as “like a tsunami” and said online messages lifted her heart and helped her feel stronger in dealing with cancer. PerthNow also quoted her reflections on the messages and reported that the speech moved people in the room.

Why couldn’t Magda Szubanski attend in person?
Her recorded message said there was a serious reason she could not attend, but it did not serve as a detailed medical update. ABC News had reported on 29 May 2025 that Szubanski had disclosed stage 4 mantle cell lymphoma and begun Nordic protocol treatment, receiving care in Melbourne. That is the health context reported before the August ceremony; it should not be mistaken for her current status.
ABC’s May 2025 report quoted Szubanski describing the experience as “rough” while saying she was hopeful. Those comments came from her earlier statement about her diagnosis, not from the Logies acceptance speech.

What is Magda Szubanski’s latest cancer update?
ABC News reported on 27 February 2026 that Szubanski had completed chemotherapy and announced she was in remission. She cautioned that remission was not a cure, saying: “It’s not a cure, but because I’ve got a good remission, that hopefully means I will keep the cancer at bay for a good, long time.” In an ABC 7.30 interview published on 1 October 2026, she was again described as being in remission. The 2025 speech therefore captures her response during treatment, not a later medical update.

The speech held two ideas together without letting one eclipse the other: Szubanski was being recognised for a substantial career, and she was grateful for the care people had shown her during a difficult period. Her work includes her breakthrough on Fast Forward, Sharon Strzelecki in Kath & Kim and Esme Hoggett in Babe. ABC also identifies her advocacy and her 2016 memoir, Reckoning, as parts of her public life.
