The best-supported version reverses the headline: Hilary Duff attended Lindsay Lohan’s 2003 Freaky Friday premiere, not the other way around. In a 2026 interview, Duff said she thought she went partly to get under Lohan’s skin—but also said Lohan’s co-star Chad Michael Murray invited her. That makes “crashed” a catchy shorthand, not evidence that Duff arrived uninvited.
Did Hilary Duff crash Lindsay Lohan’s Freaky Friday premiere?
Duff attended the August 4, 2003 premiere of Freaky Friday, where Murray, who played Lohan’s boyfriend in the film, was with her. Asked years later by Alex Cooper on Call Her Daddy whether she went intentionally, Duff answered, “I think absolutely yes. I was a teenager.” She also explained that Murray had said, “You should come with me,” and that she accepted.

So Duff’s own recollection supports a provocative motive, but not the claim that she entered without an invitation. The Independent’s February 26, 2026 account reports both parts of her story: Duff’s account of the premiere and invitation. Variety also summarized the interview and her later reconciliation: Variety’s report.
What was the connection to Cheaper by the Dozen?
The story is often told as a pair of reciprocal premiere appearances. Lohan later attended an event for Duff’s Cheaper by the Dozen, but contemporary reports differ on what happened there. Salon’s February 2004 chronology describes a dispute at the December 14, 2003 premiere party. TV Guide’s February 20, 2004 report says Lohan had been invited and remained after a reported request that she leave; Salon presents a more contentious account.

- In the tradition of THE PRINCESS DIARIES, Disney's FREAKY FRIDAY is the extremely funny and heartwarming comedy everyone will love. Dr. Tess Coleman (the hilarious Jamie Lee Curtis) and her teenage daughter Anna (rockin' Lindsay Lohan) have one thing in common -- they don't relate to each other on anything. Not clothes or men or Anna's passion to be in a rock band. Nothing. Then on
Those reports establish that the encounter was covered at the time, not that every disputed detail is settled. Salon’s chronology is here: Salon’s 2004 account. TV Guide’s contemporaneous report and Lohan interview are here: TV Guide’s 2004 account.
Was the feud really over Aaron Carter?
Aaron Carter was the relationship context most often cited in contemporaneous coverage. Salon’s timeline said Carter dated Lohan and then “started two-timing her with Duff”; TV Guide likewise described the women as reportedly feuding over Carter. That is the explanation entertainment outlets circulated, not proof that the overlap was the sole cause or that the two had a sustained, serious private feud.

- Lightning strikes twice with this double feature full of humor and heart. Years after Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her daughter Anna (Lindsay Lohan) literally walked in each other?s shoes in 2003?s ?Freaky Friday,? Anna now has a daughter and a soon-to-be stepdaughter, and things are about to get even ?Freakier? ? for all four of them!
Public comments at the time also complicated the feud narrative. Lohan told TV Guide, “I have no problem with her,” and the outlet reported that a Duff spokesperson said there had never been a feud. The record therefore supports a highly publicized rivalry story, but not a definitive account of what either woman privately felt or why every incident occurred.

In her 2026 recollection, Duff described Lohan approaching her at a club and asking whether they were good, then suggesting they take a shot. Duff said they were good. She also called Lohan her “childhood nemesis” jokingly and said the old conflict no longer mattered, giving the episode a retrospective rather than ongoing tone.

The Independent and Variety both report Duff’s account of that later conversation; it is her recollection, not a separately documented transcript of the club encounter.

What the premiere story does—and does not—show
- Supported: Duff attended Lohan’s 2003 Freaky Friday premiere and later said she believed she went with a provocative motive.
- Also supported: Duff said Murray invited her, so “crashed” should not be read as proof she was uninvited.
- Reported with conflicting details: Lohan attended an event for Duff’s Cheaper by the Dozen; accounts differ about the exchange there.
- Commonly cited, not conclusive: Carter’s overlapping relationships were offered as feud context, while public statements from Lohan and Duff’s representative minimized or denied a feud.
- Duff’s later account: She said she and Lohan made peace at a club.
