Linda McMahon and Vince McMahon were married for decades and built a wrestling business together, but their marriage is difficult to separate from the fictionalized family drama WWE put on television. Linda’s attorney confirmed in November 2024 that the couple were separated. The cited reporting does not establish that they divorced.
How Linda and Vince McMahon met
Journalist David Helfand, speaking on NPR’s Fresh Air, said both grew up in New Bern, North Carolina, and that Vince first saw Linda at church, where she sang in the choir. Helfand said they married when Linda was 17 and recounted that she bought her prom dress and wedding dress on the same day. A marriage date of August 26, 1966, has appeared in a contemporaneous timeline, but the accessible NPR transcript does not give that date. It is best treated as reported rather than as a firmly corroborated detail.
How their marriage became a business partnership
The couple’s relationship developed alongside their work in professional wrestling promotion. The Washington Post reports that they began working in the business in the 1970s. Linda handled business negotiations involving media, television and merchandising, while Vince led the creative side. She later served as WWE president and CEO at different times. Helfand described Vince’s early promotional ventures as creative but not consistently profitable, and said the couple went bankrupt. He also described Linda as bringing business acumen to the venture. The interview does not establish a date or provide a court-record citation for the bankruptcy account.
What WWE’s on-screen marriage does—and does not—show
WWE turned family members into characters and used the McMahons’ relationship in scripted storylines. Linda appeared in plots involving Vince’s on-screen infidelity and humiliation, including a storyline in which she pretended to be drugged and used a wheelchair while his character carried on an affair. Fresh Air discussed how the family played fictionalized versions of themselves and how wrestling blurred the line between what looked real and what was scripted.

Those scenes are entertainment, not evidence of an actual affair or of how either spouse treated the other privately. Any account of their marriage should keep the televised characters separate from claims about events outside the ring.
Are Linda and Vince McMahon still married?
Linda’s attorney, Laura Brevetti, confirmed to The Washington Post on November 19, 2024, that Linda and Vince were separated. The Associated Press reported the confirmation the following day. How to understand the lawsuits and allegations
Legal claims connected to the McMahons’ relationship and WWE require careful attribution. A complaint records what a plaintiff alleges; it is not itself a court finding.
Janel Grant’s complaint
Grant’s January 25, 2024, complaint makes allegations concerning Vince McMahon and refers to his marriage. The Washington Post reported that Vince called the complaint “salacious, false and defamatory” in court documents and that his attorney described the relationship as consensual. The Maryland lawsuit by former ring boys
A separate lawsuit filed in Maryland in 2024 by five anonymous former “ring boys” alleged that Linda and Vince knew about abuse by WWE employees and failed to protect them. The Associated Press reported that Linda’s attorney called the allegations false and said an earlier investigation found no grounds to continue. The cited reporting does not establish the claims as proven.
