Light Years is open at 140 William Street in Perth’s CBD. The 200-seat restaurant brings the Byron Bay-founded group’s modern Asian, share-plate approach into a heritage-listed city precinct—an urban setting for a brand often associated with coastal dining.
What changed with the Perth opening?
Perth is Light Years’ first move west from its East Coast base. Before the opening, PerthNow described the planned venue as bringing a coastal holiday mood into the city; Broadsheet’s April 2025 post-opening feature showed how that idea was adapted into a larger, more polished room. The “tranquillity” is an expression of the restaurant’s intended atmosphere, not a description of the surrounding CBD.
The venue opened in April 2025, and Visit Perth’s guide published June 11, 2026, still lists it at 140 William Street. That listing confirms its inclusion in the guide, but does not establish current hours, prices or booking availability.
What is the restaurant like inside?
Broadsheet reported capacity of 200 seats. The design combines a blush-hued palette and plush banquettes with travertine-tiled columns, curved oak chairs and round tables, within the heritage-listed 140 William Street precinct. The result pairs contemporary restaurant styling with a site whose history the designers said they wanted to respect.

Designers Will Rathgeber and Sarah Ellison told PerthNow: “As both of our first forays into WA, we wanted to be respectful of the location and the heritage building Light Years is located in.”
What kind of food does Light Years serve?
The format is modern Asian dining designed for sharing. Visit Perth’s 2026 guide describes share plates and noodles; Broadsheet’s opening coverage gave a more detailed picture of the menu, including Moreton Bay bug rolls, Korean-style beef tartare with gochujang and bonito cream, cumin lamb pancakes, lobster noodles with laksa aromatics, sticky pork belly bao and eggplant katsu bao.
Those dishes were reported at opening, not confirmed as available today. Menus can change, so check the restaurant’s current menu before visiting for a particular dish.

The larger kitchen gave the team room to develop ideas, according to culinary director Robbie Oijvall. He told Broadsheet, “Here we have a much bigger kitchen space, so we can try out more ideas,” adding, “We feel confident to push bold, punchy flavours.”

How does the Perth restaurant fit the Light Years group?
Light Years began in Byron Bay and built its presence across East Coast destinations. The Perth opening was the group’s first westward expansion, bringing its established modern Asian identity into a city setting rather than reproducing a coastal venue. Co-owner James Sutherland described the move to PerthNow as an opportunity to contribute to the city’s hospitality scene.
