Brothers Home was a real South Korean institution where vulnerable people were detained and abused, but the reviewed creator accounts do not identify it as the series’ inspiration. The comparison is understandable; treating the show as a dramatization of Brothers Home is not supported by the evidence.
Why do people connect Squid Game to Brothers Home?
The series and the institution can bring similar themes to mind: vulnerable people exposed to violence, rigid hierarchies, and powerful authorities controlling their lives. Those thematic parallels help explain online claims that Brothers Home inspired the Netflix drama. They do not establish a direct creative link.
The distinction matters because the contestants’ fictional situation is not the same as historical detention. In Squid Game, contestants are shown as having a constrained option to leave the competition. The Korea Times notes that people held at Brothers Home had no meaningful choice or due process. The outlet cautions that overstating the resemblance can flatten the institution’s history and trivialize survivors’ continuing pursuit of justice: The Korea Times’ account of the claim.
What happened at Brothers Home?
Brothers Home was a real facility in Busan associated with the detention and abuse of vulnerable people. Reporting describes it within a broader state policy of removing people labeled undesirable from public spaces and outsourcing care to social welfare corporations. The Korea Times reports that police were involved in roundups and describes forced labor, assaults, and deaths. It characterizes 40,000 as an estimate of people imprisoned under anti-vagrancy ordinances, not as a commission-confirmed count of Brothers Home detainees.

Al Jazeera reports that a 1975 ordinance allowed authorities to send people found on the streets to facilities without an arrest warrant. It also says local prosecutors found in 1987 that only 10 percent of Brothers Home inmates were homeless. These details show why describing the institution simply as a home for homeless people would be misleading: Al Jazeera’s history of South Korea’s welfare centres.
What the reported figures mean
The numbers in coverage refer to different measures and should not be combined into a single total:

The figures count different things: deaths, people held at one institution, and an estimate relating to imprisonment under anti-vagrancy rules. The 657 figure is not a detainee count, and the 40,000 and 3,100 figures have different scopes. The reported figures and commission finding are covered by The Korea Times and Al Jazeera.
What did Hwang Dong-hyuk say inspired the series?
Hwang’s reported accounts describe developing the idea during a financially difficult period and reading comics including Battle Royale and Liar Game. In a 2021 interview, he explained that he wondered how such survival games might be created in Korea. He initially wrote a film script, set it aside after struggling to find investors and actors, and returned to it years later as a series.

Netflix’s behind-the-scenes account says Hwang began developing the idea in 2008, completed a script in 2009, and first envisioned it as a film. He described frequenting comic-book stores and wanting to create something like a comic-book story in Korea. After the project stalled, it was developed with Netflix roughly a decade later. The accounts are available from About Netflix and Korea JoongAng Daily.
Hwang has also framed the premise around economic precarity. Al Jazeera attributes this line to a 2021 interview: “I wanted to show that any ordinary middle-class person in the world we live in today can fall to the bottom of the economic ladder overnight.” That speaks to a social concern behind the series; it is not evidence of a Brothers Home adaptation. Did a real event influence part of Gi-hun’s story?
Yes. A separate real-world influence has been reported for Gi-hun’s labor-conflict backstory. Radio Times says the fictional company’s story draws on the 2009 layoffs of more than 2,600 workers at SsangYong Motor Company and the ensuing 77-day strike. It reports that Hwang intended the reference to show how quickly an ordinary middle-class person could fall into economic hardship. This is a reported influence on one character’s history—not evidence that the games or the series as a whole are based on Brothers Home. See Radio Times’ account.

How to understand the connection without confusing fiction and history
- Brothers Home was real: reporting describes detention, abuse, deaths, and the state context in which the facility operated.
- The game is fictional: the reviewed sources do not establish that the competition depicts Brothers Home or that the institution directly inspired the show.
- Themes can overlap without events being equivalent: the series’ fictional contestants and the people detained at Brothers Home faced fundamentally different circumstances, especially around choice and due process.
- Other influences are documented: Hwang’s accounts point to comics, financial hardship, and inequality; reporting also connects a specific part of Gi-hun’s backstory to the SsangYong labor conflict.
