Is Playing Guitar Hard? A Beginner’s Guide to the First Steps

Guitar asks beginners to coordinate fretting, strumming, tuning, and chord changes. Learn a practical first progression—and why no single timeline fits everyone.

Playing guitar is challenging at first: you’re learning to fret notes, strum or pick, change chords, keep time, and tune the instrument. Those are skills to build one at a time—not a fixed barrier. A simple song is a more modest first goal than mastering advanced techniques or a broad repertoire, and there is no universal timeline for learning.

What makes guitar difficult at first?

Beginner courses break guitar into several separate tasks, which helps explain why the early stage can feel demanding. Your fretting hand forms notes and chords while your other hand picks or strums; then you have to move between chord shapes without losing the beat.

  • Fretting cleanly: You learn where to place fingers on the fretboard so notes and chords sound clearly. Fender includes fretboard finger placement among the early skills in its first guitar lesson guidance.
  • Coordinating both hands: Forming a chord and strumming or picking it are different actions that eventually have to work together. JustinGuitar’s Grade 1 course treats chords, strumming, and chord changes as skills to develop.
  • Keeping time through chord changes: Changing shape while maintaining a steady rhythm is part of the early learning sequence in JustinGuitar’s beginner course outline.
  • Tuning and orientation: You also need to learn how to tune the instrument and read chord diagrams. JustinGuitar includes these in its beginner fundamentals.

These are common learning tasks, not a guarantee that every beginner will struggle with each one in the same way.

What should you learn first?

A sensible first progression is to learn a few basics, then combine them in music. It is one useful route, not the only correct curriculum.

  • 38-inch beginner guitar: Measuring 38" (L) x 14" (W) x 3.25" (H), this beginner guitar delivers the timeless look and sound of a traditional acoustic guitar. Low string action helps reduce finger fatigue for easier playing and improved comfort while learning. Note: New strings may arrive out of tune, which is normal. As the strings stretch with use, the guitar will hold tuning better over time.
  1. Tune the guitar and read a chord diagram. These help you start with an instrument that is ready to play and understand how a chord shape is represented.
  2. Practice a small set of open chords. JustinGuitar’s Grade 1 course teaches eight essential open chords. Begin by checking that the notes in each shape ring clearly.
  3. Add a simple strumming pattern. Start slowly enough to make chord changes without losing the rhythm, then increase the pace as the movements become more familiar.
  4. Combine the skills in a beginner-friendly song. JustinGuitar’s course includes songs in its first grade, giving learners a way to apply chords and strumming together.

How long does it take to learn guitar?

There is no reliable universal answer. Fender advises learning the basics and practicing consistently, but its first-steps guidance does not set a proficiency deadline. A fixed promise—such as being able to play guitar in a certain number of days or months—would overstate what these sources establish.

It also depends on what you mean by “learn.” Playing a simple song is a narrower goal than mastering advanced techniques or building a wide repertoire. Choose a first milestone you can hear and recognize, such as changing between a few chords while keeping a steady strum.

How much should you practice?

Consistent practice is the useful principle, not a universal daily quota. Fender recommends building solid practice habits in its beginner advice, but the guidance does not establish one scientifically proven number of minutes for every learner.

Give practice a clear focus: tune up, work on one chord or change, then apply it to a rhythm or song. That keeps the session connected to the skills you are learning without treating any particular schedule as mandatory.

What do you need to get started?

You need a guitar to practice. Since tuning is a foundational skill, a tuner can be a useful aid, but the beginner guidance cited here does not make a particular tuner type—or a larger accessory kit—a requirement. Start with the instrument and add support that helps you tune it.

For structured lessons, JustinGuitar’s Grade 1 beginner course is one example covering basic skills, open chords, common strumming patterns, and songs. Fender’s beginner practice advice is another starting point. These are examples, not evidence that one provider or teaching format produces better results.

How should you choose a learning path?

The available guidance does not establish that acoustic or electric guitar is universally easier, or that online lessons are better or worse than in-person teaching. Instead, choose based on practical fit:
