Its Black Death-era setting draws on history, but the villa’s characters and events are the show’s own story.
What is The Decameron based on?
The series takes loose inspiration from Giovanni Boccaccio’s The Decameron, first published in Italy in the mid-14th century. In Boccaccio’s frame story, nobles and servants shelter outside Florence as plague spreads in 1348 and tell stories to pass the time. Netflix describes the series as “very loosely inspired” by the book, not as a scene-by-scene adaptation. Netflix Tudum’s adaptation feature explains that creator and showrunner Kathleen Jordan used the book as a loose framework; the writing team developed a distinct story.
What is historical, and what is fictional?
| Element | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|
| Setting | Netflix places the series in Florence in 1348, during the Black Death. This is the historical backdrop, not proof that the show’s plot happened. Netflix Media Center |
| Literary connection | Boccaccio’s collection supplies a broad parallel: people seek refuge from plague and tell stories. Netflix says Jordan drew character names from the book, but the series became its own story. Netflix Tudum |
| Villa drama | The named characters, relationships, deaths and succession disputes are plot events in the series, not established historical events. Netflix recounts them in its ending explainer. |
Why does the series use the plague setting?
Jordan’s stated interest was class disparity under pressure: Netflix reports her describing how, in a crisis, “the chasm between the haves and the have-nots grows wider and wider.” The plague is the premise that brings the characters together; the show uses that crisis to build a dark comedy about class and survival. How closely does the show follow Boccaccio’s book?
The overlap is a shared plague-and-refuge framework, along with some names drawn from the collection. That is different from retelling Boccaccio’s stories or depicting documented lives. Netflix calls the adaptation very loose and says its writers made a story of their own. Its Media Center lists the 2024 title as an eight-episode series. Netflix Media Center
