Accelerator starts as a villain, but he does not stay in that role. In the Sisters and Level Six Shift arc of A Certain Magical Index, he is an antagonist responsible for killing Mikoto Misaka’s clones. Later, he becomes a central protagonist with an antihero’s moral record: his change in direction matters, but it does not erase what he did.
Why Accelerator is a villain in the Sisters arc
Major plot spoilers follow for the Sisters and Level Six Shift storyline.
Accelerator is involved in the Level Six Shift experiment, which centers on killing Sisters—clones of Mikoto Misaka—as part of an effort to bring out his abilities. Yen Press’s description of A Certain Magical Index, Vol. 4 frames the experiment as the wholesale slaughter of the clones: Yen Press, Volume 4.
The scale is explicit in Yen Press’s description of Volume 6: “Accelerator has killed thousands of Sisters.” That publisher summary makes the early judgment clear: his actions make him a villain in this part of the story, not merely a rival whose goals happen to conflict with the heroes’. Yen Press, Volume 6

What changes when Last Order asks for help
Last Order’s appeal creates a turning point. Yen Press asks whether her request for help offers Accelerator “a chance for the Academy City’s most terrifyingly powerful esper to redeem himself.” The wording presents redemption as a possibility—not proof that his past has been forgiven or made harmless. Yen Press, Volume 6
That distinction is important: a character can begin acting to protect others and still be accountable for the people he harmed. The publisher description establishes the moment as a possible change in direction; it does not, by itself, settle whether Accelerator has earned redemption.

Why he is later called an antihero
Accelerator’s role changes as the story continues. In the later spin-off A Certain Scientific Accelerator, he is the central character rather than the opposing force in the Sisters storyline. Seven Seas describes Volume 4 as “a story of an anti-hero” caught in a “villain vs. villain” conflict. That is the publisher’s framing of his later role, not a claim that his earlier crimes no longer count. Seven Seas Entertainment, Volume 4
Volume 3’s publisher description also links him to the discovery of the Sisters and the sinister truth behind the clones: Yen Press, Volume 3. Across these descriptions, the useful distinction is between narrative role and moral judgment: Accelerator can become the protagonist while remaining an ethically compromised antihero.
So, is Accelerator good or bad?
In the Sisters arc, he is the villain: he participates in a deadly experiment and kills thousands of clones, according to Yen Press’s volume description. Later, his actions begin to point toward protecting others, and the story gives him a path toward redemption. The most accurate short answer is that he starts as a villain and becomes an antihero; the change in role does not undo the harm that defines his past.
