The real coat was dark brown; it looks dark blue in The Empire Strikes Back. The apparent contradiction comes from comparing the physical garment with its filmed appearance—a distinction that has made the jacket a small version of the famous dress debate.
What color was Han Solo’s actual Hoth coat?
The physical jacket Han wore on Hoth was dark brown. StarWars.com describes the winter jacket as dark blue on screen but dark brown “in real life,” and a LEGO/Lucasfilm design feature makes the same distinction. StarWars.com’s costume feature identifies the jacket as the most noteworthy part of Han’s cold-weather outfit.
Why does it look blue in the movie?
The filmed image is not a direct color sample of the fabric. The LEGO/Lucasfilm feature points to the icy Norwegian filming conditions and color constancy as part of why the brown jacket reads as blue. Bonhams’ 2018 catalogue, describing a near-final costume design from the John Mollo Archive, attributes the blue appearance to post-production color grading. Together, these accounts explain the discrepancy as a combination of filming conditions and the finished image, rather than evidence that the original garment was blue.
That does not establish that every shot or release has identical color values. It does explain why viewers can reasonably see a blue jacket in the film while the costume itself is described as brown.

What do the brown and blue LEGO versions represent?
The LEGO/Lucasfilm feature explains the two jacket colors on Han Solo minifigures as representing the two different references: brown for the real costume and blue for its screen appearance. The variants illustrate the distinction; they are not evidence that the original jacket changed color.
Was the costume exactly like the design sketch?
No. Bonhams’ catalogue describes the archival image as a near-final design for Han’s parka-style Hoth costume. It says the design’s upper quilted chest section was removed from the version used on screen, while a fur hood was added. The catalogue’s color description is an account of the archival design and production history, not a measured color reading of the screen-used garment.

So, is Han Solo’s coat blue or brown?
Brown if you mean the physical Hoth jacket; dark blue if you mean how it appears in the finished film. Both descriptions can be correct because they refer to different things.
