Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUnder a conventional fight setup, Ultra Instinct Goku is the stronger pick—but that is an informed comparison, not an official cross-series result. This verdict assumes manga Goku with perfected Ultra Instinct, and that both fighters’ abilities work normally against each other. Gear 5 gives Luffy extraordinary flexibility and improvisation; Goku’s automatic reactions give him the clearer defensive advantage.
Why there is no canonical winner
One Piece and Dragon Ball do not share an official power scale or a story that settles this matchup. There is no official cross-franchise ruling that Gear 5 Luffy is stronger than Ultra Instinct Goku—or the reverse. A winner can only be offered as an inference after specifying which versions and fight rules are being compared.
Here, “Ultra Instinct Goku” means the later manga version with perfected Ultra Instinct, not just the Ultra Instinct Sign Goku first used in the Tournament of Power. The anime and manga should not be blended as though they depict one identical set of events.
What Gear 5 shows Luffy can do
The official synopsis for One Piece episode 1072, broadcast August 13, 2023, depicts Gear 5 as elastic, transformative, and highly improvisational. Luffy bounces from the ground, is swallowed by Kaido and runs around inside him, inflates himself, grows enormous, and turns Kaido into a skipping rope.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The same scene also sets a limit on what can be claimed from that showing: Kaido lands a powerful hit, ending Luffy’s giant form and leaving him exhausted before he rallies and resumes the fight. It supports Gear 5’s unusual flexibility, but not unlimited stamina or unrestricted reality-altering power. The episode page associates the story with One Piece volume 103, covering chapters 1036–1046.
What Ultra Instinct gives Goku
The official summary of Dragon Ball Super volume 18 describes Ultra Instinct as allowing Goku’s body to react automatically to attacks. It recounts his later refined and perfected forms in the manga as well as his initial breakthrough in the Tournament of Power. Automatic reactions are a distinct combat advantage: Goku need not rely only on consciously choosing each dodge.

That advantage is not invulnerability. The same official story summary describes Goku being overwhelmed at points. And the form matters: the official description of Ultra Instinct Sign calls it incomplete and says Goku cannot maintain it for long because it is imperfect. That Sign-specific duration problem should not automatically be assigned to perfected Ultra Instinct.

| Category | Gear 5 Luffy | Ultra Instinct Goku |
|---|---|---|
| Defense and reaction | Elasticity and creative movement make Luffy difficult to handle, but the cited episode synopsis does not establish an automatic-dodge ability equivalent to Ultra Instinct. | His body’s automatic reactions are the clearest stated defensive advantage in the official material. |
| Attack options and improvisation | The Kaido fight shows transformations, extreme changes in size, and playful improvisation. | Goku can use ki attacks and has a broad combat history, but the cited sources do not provide a directly comparable numeric attack scale for these exact forms. |
| Stamina and duration | Episode 1072 shows Luffy exhausted after a hard hit; that scene does not establish limitless Gear 5 stamina. | Sign is explicitly described as difficult to sustain. It is a separate, earlier stage from perfected Ultra Instinct, so its limitation cannot simply be carried over. |
Verdict: Goku is favored under these assumptions
If both fighters enter a conventional fight with their abilities functioning normally, and Goku is the manga version with perfected Ultra Instinct, Goku is the more defensible pick. His automatic reactions provide a clearer answer to Luffy’s attacks than the cited Gear 5 showing provides to Goku’s defense. Luffy’s unpredictability makes the contest interesting, but it does not by itself establish that he can overcome that defensive edge.
This is a qualitative judgment, not a measured ranking: the official sources provide no shared power scale, matchup statistic, or creator ruling for Luffy versus Goku. Change the version of Goku, the continuity, how the abilities interact, or the win condition, and the assumptions—and potentially the verdict—change.
