What is Derry in the series?
Derry is the fictional Maine town where the story takes place. The series is based on King’s IT novel, and University of Maine News describes its setting as Derry in 1962. Warner Bros. Discovery’s official series page identifies the show as based on King’s book; the University of Maine’s October 2025 coverage describes the setting and notes King’s connection to Maine.
Why do people connect Derry with Bangor?
Bangor is the real-world reference point most closely associated with Derry. Bangor Daily News describes Derry as a fictionalized version of King’s hometown and points to story counterparts for Bangor features such as the Thomas Hill Standpipe and the canals along Kenduskeag Stream. That makes Bangor useful context for the fiction, not a one-to-one map of every street or location.
King explained his choice of Maine to Bangor Daily News: “I wanted it to be in Maine, because that’s the place I knew. Also, unlike Boulder, Maine towns and cities have histories going back hundreds of years.” Of Bangor specifically, he said: “I wanted Bangor because it was a tougher, harder place, with its history of loggers, the thing about the Brady Gang shoot-out, and all those fightin’ bars like the Silver Dollar that used to be down at the waterfront.” The newspaper’s report, originally published in 2017 and dated October 27, 2025, provides the quotations and examples: “Why Stephen King chose Bangor as the model for the town of Derry”.

Is Derry where the show was filmed?
Not necessarily. The story’s Maine setting and a production’s filming locations are separate things. A Maine Legislature-hosted article excerpt says the IT movies were filmed in Port Hope, Ontario, with some Bangor imagery added digitally. That evidence concerns the movies; it does not establish the complete filming locations for the television series.
