What is real—and what is fictional?

Visit Albuquerque describes the Twisters location as operating and open to the public. Its identification is specific to the exterior; it does not establish that interior scenes were filmed there. Visit Albuquerque’s Breaking Bad filming-location guide also points fans to location information and guided tours.
Can you visit the restaurant from the show?
You can visit the real Twisters location used for the exterior, but you should not expect to order from a real Los Pollos Hermanos menu. Visit Albuquerque says the location is open to the public; its page does not establish current hours or menu details. Check directly with the restaurant before making a trip.
The show is set and was filmed in Albuquerque, with locations across the metro area. Visit Albuquerque offers information for exploring locations independently as well as guided tours. Check the tourism page for current tour and visitor details before planning around a particular stop.

Why was Breaking Bad set in Albuquerque?
In an October 2018 University of New Mexico report, creator Vince Gilligan said Sony production executives had suggested New Mexico. He recalled the state’s hospitality toward filmmakers and a financial incentive, and said Albuquerque’s landscape strengthened the series. Gilligan described the fit this way: “New Mexico in general and Albuquerque specifically are the perfect setting for Breaking Bad.” (University of New Mexico Newsroom, October 23, 2018.)
Gilligan also said the production chose to make the real setting visible rather than disguise it: “The (other) smartest thing we did,” he told a UNM audience, “was to say we’re not going to change the license plates and never point the camera east toward the Sandias. We’re going to make it Albuquerque.”

Was a real Los Pollos Hermanos restaurant ever planned?
Yes. In an April 30, 2015 Reddit AMA, Gilligan said there was talk of turning Pollos Hermanos into a real restaurant. He said Sony had brought him an idea from a businessman interested in creating one, and added that he would like to see it happen. The AMA transcript and The Independent’s May 1, 2015 report document that proposal and discussions at the time. They do not establish that a permanent Los Pollos Hermanos chain exists today.
