Not in the main chronology associated with producer Koji Igarashi. Igarashi was quoted as saying he deliberately left Sonia Belmont out of the official Castlevania chronology. But Castlevania Legends is still an official Konami release: Konami lists the Game Boy game on its Castlevania portal. The distinction is between being an official series game and being included in that chronology.
What does “canon” mean for Castlevania Legends?
The answer depends on whether “canon” means an official Castlevania release or a story included in the main chronology. Konami’s listing establishes the first; Igarashi’s reported statement addresses the second.
| Question | Answer | What the source establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Was it an official Castlevania game? | Yes. | Konami’s Castlevania portal lists Castlevania Legends as a Game Boy game. |
| Is Sonia included in Igarashi’s official chronology? | No, according to Igarashi’s reported statement. | A secondary page reproduces a 2003 Electronic Gaming Monthly interview in which he says he deliberately left Sonia out. |
What did Igarashi say about Sonia Belmont?
A secondary source reproduces this sentence attributed to Igarashi in a 2003 Electronic Gaming Monthly interview: “Although, I purposefully left the Sonia Belmont character (from Castlevania: Legends for GBC) out of the official Castlevania chronology.” The accessible account is the Castlevania Wiki’s reproduction of the interview statement; the original magazine article was not available in the source record used here. The quote appeared in the context of a question about whether he would make a Castlevania game with a female protagonist.
What is Castlevania Legends about?
Konami describes the Game Boy game as a story about Sonia Belmont, a young woman with special powers who meets Alucard and confronts Dracula. Its portal calls her the first of the legendary Belmont vampire hunters. That establishes the game’s identity and premise, not its place in the main chronology.
