Iron Man is the armored superhero identity of Tony Stark, best known for turning his inventive skill into a continually evolving powered suit. The character debuted in Marvel comics in Tales of Suspense #39, published March 1, 1963. His first solo ongoing series began later, with Iron Man #1 in 1968; the 2008 Iron Man film was the first movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Who is Iron Man?

Iron Man is the costumed identity associated with Tony Stark, a character whose defining idea is the powered armor he designs and wears. The armor is not a fixed invention: Marvel describes Stark as continually tinkering with and upgrading it, making redesign a lasting feature of the character.

That premise can appear differently across comics and films. For example, Marvel/Disney Japan’s synopsis for Avengers: Age of Ultron describes Stark in that film as a businessperson and genius inventor who uses a powered suit, and says he activates Ultron as a peacekeeping system. Those are details of that movie’s story, not a universal account of every comic continuity. Marvel/Disney Japan’s Iron Man synopsis for Avengers: Age of Ultron

When did Iron Man first appear in comics?

Marvel identifies Tales of Suspense (1959) #39 as Iron Man’s first appearance. Marvel’s issue listing gives the publication date as March 1, 1963, and credits Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Gene Colan, Steve Ditko, and Don Heck. The issue is the character’s comic debut, not the first issue of his solo series. Marvel’s listing for Tales of Suspense #39

What is the difference between Iron Man’s debut and his first solo comic?

Tales of Suspense #39 introduced Iron Man. Marvel’s reading guide distinguishes that debut from Iron Man (1968) #1, which it identifies as the first issue of the character’s first ongoing solo series. So the answer depends on what “first Iron Man comic” means: his first appearance is in 1963, while his first ongoing solo title began in 1968. Marvel’s Iron Man comics reading guide

Why does Iron Man’s armor keep changing?

Successive armor designs let the character’s defining technology evolve over time. Marvel’s retrospective describes Tony Stark as continually tinkering with and upgrading the armor. One documented comics example is the Silver Centurion, designated Armor Model #8 by Marvel and noted as debuting in 1985. It is one milestone among many designs, not a complete chronology or ranking of Iron Man suits. Marvel’s retrospective on the Silver Centurion armor
