A March 2024 report proposed a speculative “Anchor” idea that might make a return imaginable, but it was a reported leak followed by the writer’s extrapolation—not established MCU canon. Now released as Deadpool & Wolverine, the film did not confirm that theory.
What was the “Anchor” theory?
In a March 23, 2024 report, BGR relayed an idea attributed to Daniel Richtman: someone could be so important to a universe that their death causes that universe to decay. BGR then speculated that this proposed “Anchor” concept might offer a route to Tony Stark’s return. The mechanism was not presented as a confirmed Marvel rule, and the article did not establish that Marvel had adopted it.
The theory’s logic is that if a universe depends on a particular person, the person’s death could threaten that universe. But importance to a universe and a demonstrated plot rule are different things. The report offered a possibility, not evidence that an Anchor mechanism exists in the MCU.
Why does Iron Man’s return raise a continuity problem?
Avengers: Endgame is dated April 26, 2019 on Marvel’s official film page, which describes the Avengers’ final stand against Thanos. BGR’s account frames Tony Stark’s ending as giving his life to save the universe. A return that simply undid that sacrifice could weaken the consequence of the film’s ending.

In theory, an Anchor premise might be used to distinguish a multiverse variant or other appearance from resurrecting the Tony Stark who died in the main timeline. That distinction could preserve the original sacrifice while allowing another version of the character to appear. It remains a speculative route, however; the theory provides no proof that Marvel intends either kind of return.
What did Deadpool & Wolverine actually establish?
Marvel’s official page gives the film’s release date as July 26, 2024, identifies Shawn Levy as director, and summarizes the plot as Wade Wilson facing a threat to his homeworld and trying to persuade a reluctant Wolverine to help. That official synopsis does not establish the Anchor mechanism or confirm Iron Man’s return.

So the original headline’s “might” matters: it described a possible interpretation before release, not an announced plot point. The theory should be read retrospectively as rumor and speculation, not as an explanation supplied by the finished film.
What questions does the theory leave open?
The premise also creates unanswered continuity questions. Could an Anchor die of old age? What happens to a universe before its Anchor is born? BGR raised these as problems with the idea, not as rules the MCU has answered. Without a defined mechanism, it is unclear how the concept would handle either case—or what “decay” would mean in the story.

What can viewers conclude?
- The Anchor idea was a reported leak and a speculative extrapolation, not a verified canon rule.
- It could hypothetically separate a multiverse appearance from undoing the main timeline’s ending, but no evidence here shows that Marvel adopted that approach.
- Deadpool & Wolverine is released, but its official synopsis does not confirm the theory or an Iron Man return.
