Irena’s Vow is a 2023 drama based on the life of Irena Gut Opdyke, a Polish Catholic woman who aided Jewish people during the Holocaust. The film dramatizes her decision to shelter Jewish workers in a German commandant’s home; Yad Vashem’s historical record documents a wider set of acts of assistance and gives important context for the story.
What is Irena’s Vow about?
The film follows Irena Gut, a 19-year-old Polish woman employed in a German officer’s household. According to distributor WestEnd Films, she hides twelve Jewish workers in the home’s basement, with the hiding continuing over two years. That is the film’s dramatic synopsis, not a complete account of the historical record.
WestEnd Films describes Irena’s Vow as a 2023 English-language drama produced across Canada and Poland and directed by Louise Archambault. Sophie Nélisse and Dougray Scott are among its cast. WestEnd Films’ film page provides the synopsis and credits.
Is Irena’s Vow based on a true story?
Yes. The film is based on the life of Irena Gut Opdyke, but its synopsis should be distinguished from the archival record. Yad Vashem identifies Opdyke as Polish and Catholic, born in 1918 and deceased in 2003, and documents her aid to Jewish prisoners and survivors. Its account describes several forms of assistance rather than simply repeating the film’s basement-shelter summary.

What Yad Vashem documents
Yad Vashem’s individual record says Opdyke supervised laundry at a camp near Tarnopol, where she aided Jewish inmates and helped obtain passes. As German forces liquidated the camp on July 23, 1943, she assisted people in finding hiding places. The record also describes her providing provisions and maintaining contact with people hiding in a bunker, and says she escaped Gestapo arrest in March 1944. Yad Vashem’s record for Irena Gut Opdyke contains the biographical account.
Yad Vashem recognized Opdyke as Righteous Among the Nations on July 8, 1982. The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum explains that the title honors non-Jews who risked their lives to aid Jews during the Holocaust. Its criteria include a motivation to save Jews rather than gain personally and first-hand testimony from people who were rescued. The museum reported that 28,707 people from 51 countries had received the title as of January 1, 2024; that dated figure is not a 2026 total. See the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s explanation of the recognition.

Further reading on Holocaust rescuers
For broader context on the people recognized as Righteous Among the Nations, Yad Vashem publishes The Encyclopedia of the Righteous among the Nations: Entire Series (10 Volumes). It covers rescuers’ stories, aid, risks, testimony and evidence across the recognition category; it is not a book specifically about Opdyke. Yad Vashem’s store listing describes the series.
