Powerplex hates Invincible because Mark Grayson’s fight with Omni-Man in Chicago killed Scott Duvall’s sister and niece. Scott’s anger over those civilian deaths has real force: showrunner Simon Racioppa says many of Powerplex’s accusations against Mark are right. But Scott turns a valid grievance into revenge, and his plan ends with his wife and infant son dead.
Who is Powerplex?
Powerplex is Scott Duvall, a scientist at the Global Defense Agency, voiced by Aaron Paul. Season 3, episode 6 introduces him as someone whose life was shattered in the Chicago battle between Mark and his father, Nolan Grayson, also known as Omni-Man. Scott’s sister Jessica and niece Gretchen were killed in the destruction.
Why does Powerplex blame Mark?
Scott’s grievance is about the consequences of a fight involving superpowered heroes—not simply resentment that Mark is powerful. He believes Mark should answer for the civilian deaths and destruction in Chicago. Racioppa told Den of Geek that he hoped viewers would feel Powerplex “had a point about a lot of this,” adding that “nine out of the ten things he said he was right about.” That is Racioppa’s rhetorical assessment of the character’s accusations, not a measured tally or a claim that every accusation is correct.

Was Powerplex right about Mark?
In the episode’s moral argument, Powerplex is right to insist that civilian losses matter and that Mark cannot treat them as incidental simply because he was fighting to stop a threat. His anger forces Mark to confront the human cost of the Chicago battle. That does not mean Scott’s blame settles every question of responsibility, or that grief gives him the right to punish Mark or endanger others.
The distinction is between the substance of Scott’s grievance and the way he acts on it. His losses are real; revenge is his choice.

How does Scott’s revenge destroy his family?
Scott steals powerful disks from the GDA to amplify his existing energy-absorption and electrokinetic abilities. He stages crimes to draw Invincible into a confrontation, initially clashing with Shapesmith and Atom Eve before luring Mark to his home. Scott’s wife, Becky, takes part in the ruse, putting their infant son Jack in danger.
Scott loses control of his power. An electric explosion kills Becky and Jack, leaving Scott imprisoned. The episode presents rehabilitation as the remaining option because removing the disks would kill him. The outcome sharpens the tragedy: a man seeking accountability for deaths caused by a battle creates another catastrophe through his own escalating plan.

Why the conflict matters to Mark
Robert Kirkman describes Powerplex as a force that makes Mark question what he stands for as he moves from adolescence into adulthood. Kirkman called the encounter an important “rug pulling moment” in Mark’s evolution in the Den of Geek interview. Powerplex is not only an opponent to defeat; he gives Mark a painful reason to examine what his actions mean to people who are not in the fight.

Kirkman has explained the writing principle behind characters like Scott: “Every person is the main character of their own story, and they need a reason why their actions make sense to them.” In a Nexus Point News interview, he described the value of revealing that perspective and humanizing characters such as Powerplex. Racioppa likewise said the characters’ emotional stories should remain engaging even without their powers.
