Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter is a two-part Netflix documentary about Cathy Terkanian’s search for her daughter, Aundria Bowman, who disappeared from her adoptive home in 1989. It follows Terkanian’s pursuit of answers and the case’s shifting accounts without resolving every uncertainty about what happened.

What is Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter about?

In April 2010, Cathy Terkanian received a letter from a social worker informing her that the daughter she had placed for adoption 35 years earlier had disappeared in 1989. Netflix Tudum says Terkanian enlisted an amateur sleuth and local authorities, pursuing answers for ten years. The documentary centers on the question that frames her search: what happened to Aundria?

The series moves from the discovery of Aundria’s disappearance toward a suspect and then to developments after an arrest in another cold case. Netflix’s episode summaries describe that progression, while the reported case history includes accounts that changed over time. Those accounts should not be mistaken for a single, uncontested explanation of Aundria’s fate.

How is the documentary structured?

Netflix lists the 2024 title as two parts. The US listing gives these runtimes and episode descriptions:

Part Runtime Netflix description
Part 1 1 hour 13 minutes Follows Terkanian learning of Aundria’s disappearance and the search that leads to a suspect.
Part 2 1 hour 18 minutes Follows developments after an arrest in another cold case.

The US Netflix listing rates it TV-MA. Netflix Media Center identifies the United States as the country of origin and gives the US release time as September 12, 2024, at 7:00 a.m. GMT.

What is known about the case—and what remains disputed?

TIME’s September 12, 2024 account describes investigators connecting Dennis Bowman to another murder investigation and recounts his changing statements about Aundria. TIME reports that Bowman was sentenced to second-degree murder on February 7, 2022. That sentence is part of the case chronology; it does not make every account he gave about Aundria’s disappearance settled fact.

Director Ryan White told TIME, “I still am not sure that Dennis has ever told the full truth about what happened to Aundria.” That is White’s stated view, not an independent finding. TIME’s account also includes a correction published September 13, 2024: an investigator tested a cup Bowman had been drinking from; Bowman did not expressly agree to the test. The distinction matters when recounting the DNA evidence.

Netflix Tudum’s trailer transcript attributes to Terkanian the line, “I gotta find this kid alive.” It captures the urgency of the search, but the documentary’s reported chronology and the changing accounts around the case are best kept distinct from any conclusion the evidence does not establish.
