What is Dexter: Original Sin about?
The series goes back to 1991, before the events of the original Dexter. Dexter is moving from student life into a forensics internship at Miami Metro. At the same time, Harry helps him find a way to manage his urges through the Code that shapes Dexter’s later life. Paramount+ frames the story as Dexter’s early formation, rather than a continuation of the original series. Paramount+’s series page uses the promotional phrase “America’s favorite serial killer… in training.”

Where does Original Sin fit in the Dexter franchise?
Its 1991 setting makes Original Sin an early chapter in the fictional chronology, while its 2024–25 release means audiences encountered it after the original series and other franchise installments. Paramount+’s viewing guide presents both release-order and in-universe chronological approaches. Viewers can choose release order to follow the franchise as it arrived, or chronology to follow Dexter’s story by its fictional timeline; consult the guide itself for the full order. Paramount+’s viewing guide also identifies Jeff Lindsay’s Darkly Dreaming Dexter as the source novel for the original series, rather than an Original Sin tie-in.
