As the country divides, the Hindu woman who cares for her and the Muslim men who love her are caught in a circle of friends fractured by communal violence. “India at 75” is a 2022 anniversary lens for revisiting the film—not the occasion for which it was made.
What Earth is about
Lenny, played by Maia Sethna, is a young Parsi girl with polio. Her adult self, voiced by Shabana Azmi, narrates the story. Lenny’s Ayah, Shanta (Nandita Das), is loved by two men: Dil, also known as the Ice-Candy Man (Aamir Khan), and Hassan, a masseur (Rahul Khanna). They and Lenny belong to a wider circle of Hindu, Muslim and Sikh friends.

The story unfolds in Lahore during Partition. Rumours and reports of violence feed public fear, and the division of the country turns a once-shared social world into a setting of suspicion and attacks. The production company’s synopsis describes the group’s division and the tragedy that follows; TIFF’s Canadian Film Encyclopedia likewise places the story in Lahore and traces the escalation from rumours to violence.
How the film portrays Partition
Earth makes a child’s perspective its route into a historical catastrophe. Lenny’s place in the group allows the film to show how political division reaches into ordinary relationships: Shanta’s personal ties and the friends’ shared life become vulnerable as communal tensions intensify. That focus gives the film an intimate dramatic perspective, not a comprehensive account of Partition or its many experiences.

TIFF’s Canadian Film Encyclopedia states that twelve million people relocated and more than one million were killed in the violence surrounding Partition. Those are the figures given in TIFF’s film entry; the film’s family and friendship story should not be mistaken for a statistical or historical survey.
Mehta’s focus on nationalism and territory
Mehta described Earth as a film about nationalism and what territory means to people. In a 1999 interview with the Los Angeles Times, she summarized the three films in her Elements trilogy this way: “’Fire’ is about the politics of sexuality, ‘Earth’ is about the politics of nationalism, and ‘Water’ is about the politics of religion.” Earth is the trilogy’s second film, between Fire and Water.
Mehta also explained her intended use of colour in the film: she associated red with blood, passion and earth, and yellow with hope and warmth. These are the meanings she said she wanted the colours to carry, rather than a universal key to every image.
Cast, credits and source novel
Hamilton-Mehta Productions and TIFF date Earth to 1998. TIFF lists its runtime as 110 minutes and credits Mehta and Bapsi Sidhwa as writers, Giles Nuttgens for cinematography, Barry Farrell for editing and A. Rahman for music. Cast members include Aamir Khan, Nandita Das, Rahul Khanna, Maia Sethna and Kitu Gidwani.

In a 2025 interview with Bollywood Hungama, Mehta reflected on the film’s continuing resonance through its treatment of communal friction. She described Dil’s change from a fun-loving lover into a vengeful, hate-spewing man, and said: “Earth 1947 to this day remains the film I am most proud of.” These are the director’s reflections on the work, not a claim that every viewer will read it in the same way.
Rank #4
For viewers revisiting Partition through cinema, Earth offers a character-centred drama about how nationalism and territorial division can rupture intimate bonds. Its perspective is powerful precisely because it stays close to a small circle of people; it should be watched as a film’s interpretation of history, not as a substitute for broader historical accounts.
