Miyagi Hasani Ayo Chilombo was Jhené Aiko’s brother and, by her account, someone she was close to throughout their upbringing. A Nylon profile published in 2017 reports that he died of cancer on July 19, 2012, aged 26, after being diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2010. Aiko has spoken about how grief returned unpredictably and how she connected her loss with the creative work behind Trip.
Who was Miyagi Hasani Ayo Chilombo?
Miyagi Hasani Ayo Chilombo was Jhené Aiko’s brother. In an interview republished by Dork, Aiko described growing up in a household with five siblings who were close in age and shared their home and activities. She said she and Miyagi were close in age and did many things together.
The biographical details most often reported about his illness and death come from Nylon: the profile says he was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2010 and died of cancer on July 19, 2012, at age 26. Those particulars are attributable to that profile; the sources available here do not include medical documentation or a family death notice independently confirming them.

“Often, when you’re dealing with grief, it’s kind of like you relapse,” she says. “Something little can stretch you all the way back to that moment and you’re starting all over and reliving everything. So that keeps happening to me, but the older I get I feel like I’m finding a way to not let it completely disable me. My writing is like my therapy. That’s what I turn to.”
She was speaking about her own experience, not offering a general prescription. Her words convey how she understood the unpredictable return of loss and the role writing played in her personal process.

How did her brother’s death connect to Trip?
Aiko told the Los Angeles Times, “Since my brother’s passing, I’ve been trying to navigate through my feelings.” The paper connects that effort to Trip, the album through which she explored those feelings.
Universal Music Canada describes Trip as a multimedia project that included a short film and poetry book as well as the album. The label’s 2020 account also links Aiko’s later album CHILOMBO to the loss, describing her efforts to manage grief through relationships, substances and art. That is the record company’s promotional framing, rather than an independent account of her private life.
