Inside Tom Cruise’s Top 14 Cars: The List, the Porsche 928 and What’s Verified

Gadget Review’s 2025 ranking includes 14 cars, from a Buick Roadmaster to a Mercedes-Benz CLK 500. The Porsche 928’s film history is documented—but that does not prove Cruise owned the screen car or still owns the listed vehicles.

Tom Cruise’s “Top 14 Cars” is a ranking published by Gadget Review on April 9, 2025—not a verified inventory of cars he owns today. The list includes a Porsche 928 associated with Risky Business and a Bugatti Veyron, but the strongest documented story is the distinction between a car appearing in a film and a car belonging to its star.

What cars are on Tom Cruise’s top 14 list?

Below is the order in Gadget Review’s April 9, 2025, list, counted from number 14 to number 1. It is the publication’s ranking, not an independently established ranking of Cruise’s favorites or a confirmed current garage.

  1. No. 14: 1949 Buick Roadmaster
  2. No. 13: Porsche 911 (993 generation)
  3. No. 12: 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS
  4. No. 11: Porsche 928
  5. No. 10: 1976 Dodge Colt
  6. No. 9: Ford Excursion
  7. No. 8: 2005 Bugatti Veyron
  8. No. 7: 1988 Nissan 300ZX SCCA race car
  9. No. 6: 1958 Chevrolet Corvette C1
  10. No. 5: Porsche 911 (996 version)
  11. No. 4: Saleen Mustang S281
  12. No. 3: 1983 BMW 3 Series E30
  13. No. 2: 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class
  14. No. 1: 2009 Mercedes-Benz CLK 500

Gadget Review’s article makes ownership assertions, but those claims should be treated as reporting rather than proof that Cruise still owns each vehicle. British GQ’s July 3, 2020, account also associates several of these models with Cruise; it, too, is magazine reporting rather than an official vehicle registry.

Did Tom Cruise own the Porsche 928 from Risky Business?

The film connection is well established; Cruise’s ownership of the specific screen car is not. Porsche’s historical timeline says, “1983 The 928 stars alongside Tom Cruise in the movie Risky Business.” That confirms the car appeared with him in the film, not that he owned that particular vehicle.

Porsche’s 928 history says the model debuted in 1977 as a modern successor concept to the 911, with a front-mounted V8 and rear-mounted transmission. Production ended in 1995, after around 61,000 cars had been built. Power and other specifications varied by model year and market, so a specification needs a specific version attached to it.

What the auction record establishes

Barrett-Jackson’s Houston 2021 catalog identifies its lot 749 as a 1979 Porsche 928 coupe and a “Hero car” from Paul Brickman’s 1983 film. The catalog specifies a 4.5-liter V8 and five-speed manual for that example, and says multiple 928s were used in production. It therefore documents one film hero car—not the only 928 used, and not automatically Cruise’s personal car.

Barrett-Jackson’s catalog entry is useful precisely because it distinguishes the provenance of a particular car from the broader film association. Porsche’s timeline reports that the film car sold at auction for $1.9 million in 2020; that historical sale figure is not a current valuation for all 928s.

What is known about the Bugatti Veyron claim?

The 2005 Bugatti Veyron is No. 8 in Gadget Review’s ranking. British GQ reported in 2020 that Cruise bought a Veyron in 2005 and recounted its arrival at the Mission: Impossible III premiere. That is a dated secondary report, not confirmation from Cruise, Bugatti, or a vehicle-specific ownership record.

Accordingly, the evidence supports saying that GQ reported a purchase in 2005; it does not establish that Cruise still owns the car. No current ownership status should be inferred from the ranking or from the premiere anecdote.

How much of the list is independently corroborated?

British GQ’s July 3, 2020, article reports a number of the same vehicles, including the Buick Roadmaster, Corvette, Chevelle, Dodge Colt, Porsche 928, BMW E30, Nissan 300ZX race car, Porsche 993, Ford Excursion, Veyron and Saleen Mustang S281. The overlap shows that Gadget Review’s list draws on car-collection reporting that predates its 2025 publication; it does not turn those reports into an official inventory.

GQ also attributes a comment about Cruise’s race-driving approach to championship rival Roger French: “His attitude was go fast all the time.” That is French’s reported observation, not a statement by Cruise.

Cruise’s official website includes a filmography, listing Risky Business (1983) and Rain Man (1988), but the page is not a car registry. It does not confirm ownership of the vehicles in the ranking.

How to judge claims about movie-used cars

A car associated with a production can have several different kinds of provenance. Those labels are not interchangeable:

  • Appeared in a film: establishes an on-screen association, not the actor’s ownership.
  • Hero car: identifies a car used prominently in a production, as Barrett-Jackson describes its 1979 928.
  • Auctioned film car: means a specific vehicle was offered or sold with a stated production history; check the catalog’s exact claims.
  • Actor-owned car: requires evidence of ownership separate from the vehicle’s role in a film.

For a classic car, the exact year and trim, originality and condition, transmission and market specification, and documented provenance all matter. A race-prepared car, replica, ordinary road car and documented movie-used example should not be treated as equivalent simply because they share a model name.
