Pennywise reveals that Marge will grow up to be Richie Tozier’s mother—and targets her because Richie will one day help defeat it. The revelation connects the finale’s family twist to the series’ backward chronology: the creators present It as a being that experiences time nonlinearly and may be able to alter history.
Who is Marge in Welcome to Derry?
Marge is Richie Tozier’s future mother. Pennywise singles her out because it knows Richie will eventually be among the people who bring about its defeat. That makes the reveal more than a surprise family connection: it gives Pennywise a reason to focus on a child whose significance lies partly in the future.
The series makes this a revelation about its own story and characters. It should not be mistaken for a plot point established in precisely this form by Stephen King’s novel.
Why does Pennywise want to kill Marge?
Pennywise is trying to prevent a future in which Richie helps defeat it. Targeting Marge is therefore an attempt to interfere with the chain of events that leads to Richie’s role in that defeat.

The motive depends on the show’s account of how It relates to time. Pennywise is not simply reacting to events as they happen in the present; the series suggests that it can perceive consequences across time and act on that knowledge.
Why does the series tell its story backward?
Co-creator and finale director Andy Muschietti told TheWrap that the creators enlarged an ambiguous idea from King’s novel to give the reverse chronology a story-level rationale. “We made it bigger to the point where the whole reason why we’re telling the story backwards – because a monster that doesn’t experience time linearly can live in time in a very different way, and at the same time, can rewrite history, right?”

Muschietti said the novel does not settle the question. As he put it: “There’s something very mysterious in the book, there’s one moment of the Losers speculating about the way that It experiences time, but there’s not a single answer in the book.” So the series’ nonlinear-time premise is the creators’ interpretation and expansion of that ambiguity, not a definitive explanation supplied by the novel.
How does Rich return in the finale?
Rich Santos returns to help the children trap Pennywise. The finale draws on Dick Hallorann’s ability to see the dead to make Rich’s return part of the supernatural logic of the climax. Muschietti told TheWrap that bringing Rich back was added late in the creative process.

Does the finale destroy Pennywise?
The finale leaves Pennywise’s physical form contained in Derry; that is not the same as establishing that the entity is fully destroyed. The broader question of what containment means for its mind remains open in the show’s mythology.

HBO’s official schedule announcement described season one as an eight-episode series, based on King’s It and expanding the vision of the feature films It and It Chapter Two. The announced season ran from its October 26, 2025 premiere to its December 14, 2025 finale.

A three-season backward arc has been described as an initial plan, not as confirmation that the series has been renewed for those seasons. TheWrap reported on December 14, 2025 that season two had not been officially renewed at that time. That report establishes the status on that date; it does not establish the series’ present renewal status.
