Written by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated by Alex Maleev, the 12-issue series follows Doom’s contested attempt to pursue heroism while the legacy of Doctor Doom continues to shape how allies and enemies respond to him.
How did Doctor Doom become Iron Man?
Marvel introduces Doom as “a new Iron Man”: the established villain takes up the identity after Tony Stark’s absence and sets out on a different course. The premise is a change in role, not a clean break from his history. Marvel’s issue #1 listing frames the move as the Marvel Universe’s greatest villain trying something new.

The title’s central question is whether Doom can use the Iron Man legacy to do good when his own name is bound to a long record of conflict. The first collection describes a new heroic quest shadowed by Doom’s past sins and secrets. Other characters do not simply accept the change: they question his motives and try to discover what he is planning.
Why does Doom try to become a hero?
The publisher’s descriptions present Doom’s transformation as an attempt at heroism, but they do not offer a creator interview explaining a definitive psychological turning point. The story’s tension comes from the gap between Doom’s stated new direction and the suspicion his history provokes. His change of armor and identity is only the beginning; he has to contend with the consequences of being Doctor Doom.

#1 Best Overall
Marvel’s description of the complete collection places Ben Grimm, Pepper Potts, and Riri Williams—also known as Ironheart—among those who want to know Doom’s plan. That resistance makes the redemption attempt a conflict with other people’s judgment as well as with external threats.
What threatens Doom’s new role?
The series keeps Doom’s past in view while bringing familiar heroes and powerful adversaries into the story. The publisher’s complete-volume synopsis teases a cosmic-level opponent, a mortal enemy, and a mystery involving Victor’s reincarnated mother; those are synopsis details rather than a full account of every plot turn.
