In it, Martin addressed viewers directly: “Hey, it’s me Tanner. If you’re watching this, I am dead.” He had recorded the message so he could express his thoughts in his own words and give Shay the option to share it when she was ready.
Why Martin recorded the message
Martin explained that recording the video gave him “a good opportunity to get all your thoughts out.” He also wanted to consider what his wife might need after his death. By making the announcement himself in advance, he gave Shay the choice of when to post it rather than leaving her to make the first announcement while grieving. ABC News reported on the video and Martin’s stated intent on June 26, 2025.
The video was prerecorded and shared after his death; it was not a live announcement. Martin’s choice reflected his own circumstances and wishes, not a recommendation that other families should handle loss the same way.

Diagnosis and treatment
Martin was diagnosed with colon cancer in November 2020, when he was 25. A Miami Herald report published in June 2025, citing People, said that by October 2024 he had undergone more than 50 rounds of chemotherapy, roughly 50 rounds of radiation, at least six major surgeries, and dozens of other procedures. Those figures describe his treatment as of October 2024, not a verified lifetime total.
