Khujli is a 2017 short film from Terribly Tiny Talkies about a married couple whose routine takes a comic turn after the husband finds handcuffs in their son’s room. Neena Gupta’s character, Roopmati, connects them to BDSM and explains the reference through her reading of Fifty Shades of Grey to her husband, played by Jackie Shroff.
What happens in Khujli?
The story centers on Girdharilal and Roopmati, a married couple played by Jackie Shroff and Neena Gupta. When Girdharilal discovers handcuffs in their son’s room, Roopmati explains their association with BDSM. The discovery becomes the comic opening for a change in the couple’s intimate life.
In the film’s premise, Fifty Shades of Grey is the reason Roopmati knows about BDSM: she has read the novel. The reference helps turn an awkward discovery into a conversation between the spouses, rather than making the handcuffs a recommendation or the film a guide to BDSM.
Why does the film refer to Fifty Shades of Grey?
Director Sonam Nair said her curiosity about the premise came from seeing seemingly orthodox middle-aged women, including her mother, reading Fifty Shades of Grey. That is Nair’s account of her inspiration, not evidence of a general pattern among women. The film uses the contrast between Roopmati’s reading and the couple’s everyday married life as the setup for its risqué comedy.

Gupta described the subject as “a topic we rarely talk about here” in a Hindustan Times interview. That is her characterization of the conversation around the subject, not a measured finding about public attitudes in India.
