Indian jewellery is not one style with one uninterrupted history. It is a rich plurality of objects and traditions shaped by region, materials, craft, movement and patronage. The National Museum in New Delhi frames its Alamkara gallery as spanning five thousand years, bringing together more than 250 displayed objects—from Harappan agate beads to jewels associated with deities, Mughal emperors and maharajas. That span belongs to the museum’s collection; it does not mean every technique or regional tradition has existed unchanged for five millennia.
What does the history of Indian jewellery encompass?
The National Museum calls its collection “a striking expression of the country’s aesthetic and cultural history.” Its broad range is useful precisely because it resists a single timeline or definition: jewellery made in different places and periods served different purposes and drew on distinct materials and skills. The Alamkara gallery’s more than 250 displayed objects and five-thousand-year span are the museum’s account of its collection, not evidence of one continuous style. National Museum collection
Jewellery can register both continuity and change. A technique may be carried forward while makers adapt its materials, forms or ornament to new patrons and settings. The museum’s teaching resource, for example, discusses historical techniques alongside twentieth-century pieces that it interprets as continuing inherited techniques and aesthetics. Such examples illuminate particular objects; they are not exhaustive definitions of every regional tradition. National Museum resource pack
How did Mughal jeweled arts combine influences and techniques?
Mughal jeweled arts reflect an exchange of traditions rather than a one-way story of influence. The Metropolitan Museum describes them as drawing on the mixed traditions of the Indian subcontinent and a wider Islamic heritage. Indian makers and regional practices remain part of that account. What is kundan jewellery?
Kundan is a gem-setting technique. The Met describes it as using pure gold foil around stones. In a Mughal-style example described by the National Museum’s resource pack, gems are set on the front of a piece using kundan. Kundan refers to the setting method, not to enamel work or to every feature of an ornament called Mughal-style. The Met; National Museum resource pack
What is minakari?
Minakari is enamelling. In the museum resource’s Mughal-style example, enamel decorates the reverse while kundan-set gems appear on the front. The two techniques can therefore be combined in a single ornament, but they are not interchangeable terms: one describes gem-setting and the other enamel decoration. National Museum resource pack

How did regional craft traditions continue and adapt?
South Indian repoussé work
The National Museum resource also points to South Indian necklaces and bangles made from sheet gold worked in repoussé, a method of shaping metal by working it from the reverse to form relief. It presents these as examples of a regional craft tradition, not as a template for all South Indian jewellery. National Museum resource pack
A particular manga malai necklace in the collection
One early twentieth-century South Indian manga malai necklace described by the National Museum has 46 mango-shaped pendants. Each has a central white sapphire surrounded by cabochon rubies, and the pendants are connected by a flexible woven gold cord. These details describe that specific collection object, not every necklace known as a manga malai. National Museum collection

How should historical jewellery be compared with modern hallmarks?
Historical styles and modern hallmarking answer different questions. A design’s period, region, materials and technique help explain its place in jewellery history; a hallmark is an official record of precious-metal content. A hallmark does not identify a tradition or establish an ornament’s historical significance.
What marks should a buyer check on hallmarked gold?
BIS says gold and silver are currently covered by its hallmarking system. For hallmarked gold in the HUID system introduced on 1 July 2021, BIS lists three marks: the BIS logo, purity expressed in caratage and fineness, and a six-digit alphanumeric HUID. The listed permitted gold grades are 14K (585), 18K (750), 20K (833), 22K (916), 23K (958) and 24KS (995). These are the grades on the BIS FAQ; buyers should consult BIS for current rules and instructions. BIS hallmarking FAQ

BIS says consumers can use the BIS Care app’s “Verify HUID” feature to check the identifier. The consumer FAQ says an invoice should state the article description, net precious-metal weight, purity in carat and fineness, and hallmarking charges. Consumers can also seek purity testing at a BIS-recognized assaying and hallmarking centre. BIS hallmarking FAQ; BIS consumer FAQ
How does silver hallmarking differ?
The BIS FAQ lists permitted silver fineness grades of 800, 835, 900, 925, 970 and 990. The gold-specific three-mark description above should not be assumed to describe silver marks; check BIS guidance for the item and current requirements. BIS hallmarking FAQ
