Muhammad Fanatil al-Hajaya is the Jordanian Bedouin poet at the center of William Tamplin’s 2015 profile. His poem “The West’s Crafty Men” uses political satire, animal imagery and apocalyptic language to express one poet’s view of regional conflict and division. The profile offers a perspective on hopes and anxieties in the Arab world—not evidence that Hajaya speaks for all Arabs. “Jordan’s most popular poet” is the article’s framing, not a ranking supported by audience or sales figures.
Who is Muhammad Fanatil al-Hajaya?
Tamplin’s profile traces Hajaya’s path from love poetry to political verse. He began writing love poems as a teenager in 1970s Jordan and later turned toward political subjects during the Iran-Iraq War. His life also included Jordanian military service and farming, appearances at international poetry festivals, a 2004 project collecting Jordanian Bedouin poetry, work for Jordan Army Radio, a parliamentary run and a television program about Bedouin culture.
These details situate the poet in several worlds—oral and written literature, public broadcasting and politics—rather than presenting his poetry as detached from everyday life. They are part of Tamplin’s account, not a measure of his popularity.
What makes Bedouin poetry distinct?
In Tamplin’s description, Bedouin poetry uses a vernacular associated with particular tribes, distinct from the Arabic register commonly used in news media and high literature. That difference matters to readers: the poem’s voice is rooted in a specific cultural and linguistic setting, not in a single, uniform “Arab” literary style.

Political Bedouin verse can function as rhymed, metered criticism. Tamplin notes that it has had limited appreciation beyond Bedouin areas, while televised poetry competitions helped renew its popularity. That describes a form and its reach; it does not establish a national audience ranking for Hajaya.
What does “The West’s Crafty Men” say?
Written amid conflict and foreign intervention as the poet understood them in 2015, “The West’s Crafty Men” addresses the Syrian conflict, the roles of Russia and Iran, divisions among Arab states and what the poem presents as a loss of Arab power. Its political statements should be read as the speaker’s interpretation of events at that time, not as neutral or independently verified descriptions of the actors named.

A translated line captures the poem’s language of plotting: “The West’s crafty men laid a trap, and Putin fell in”. This is Hajaya’s poetic allegation as translated and discussed by Tamplin; the line itself does not establish that a trap existed.
Animal imagery and looming catastrophe
The poem uses animal metaphors that Tamplin reads in relation to Bedouin cultural associations. Alongside that imagery, references to conspiracy and outside manipulation frame regional rivalries as forces threatening to bring catastrophe. The images turn political anxieties into a dramatic, memorable poetic argument; they are not factual labels for the groups or governments involved.

One poet’s voice, not a survey of Arab opinion
Tamplin explicitly cautions that Hajaya’s poetry does not represent all Arabs. The work can give readers access to one politically engaged Bedouin poet’s hopes and fears, and to the concerns he presents as shared or recognizable. It cannot establish what Arab people as a whole believed. The profile supplies no audience, sales or readership statistic to substantiate a literal claim that Hajaya was Jordan’s most popular poet.
