He recalls swimming 12 kilometres a day for two years in preparation. A later interview gives a different account of his Asian Games participation, so the book’s qualification story should be read as Soman’s recollection, not as independently verified selection history.
What Soman writes about qualifying
The account appears in a June 25, 2024 excerpt from Keep Moving: Lessons on Staying Young in Mind and Body from India’s Fittest Family, a book credited to Milind Soman, Ankita Konwar, Usha Soman and Roopa Pai, and published by Juggernaut. Scroll published the excerpt.
Soman describes a progression from returning to national competition to winning the senior breaststroke title. After four years without a national medal, he says he began reaching the national podium again at 15 and moved from swimming at Shivaji Park to training at Otter’s Club in Bandra. He recalls being selected among hopefuls at a national camp, where a foreign coach helped him improve his stroke technique.
In the book excerpt, Soman says he became National Open Men’s Champion in the 100-metre breaststroke at 18. He writes that he defended the title for the next four years, set personal and national records, and “easily” qualified for the 1986 Games. The passage is a first-person account; it does not provide selection documents or independent confirmation of the results.

How he says he prepared
After enrolling in a diploma course in electrical engineering, Soman says he concentrated on preparing for the Games and swam 12 kilometres every day for two years. That figure is his recollection in the book, not a verified training log.
He also recalls arriving at the 1986 national training camp, where an unnamed Australian coach looked at his physique and said, “We can do something with this.” The excerpt presents the remark as the coach’s response to Soman; it does not identify the coach.

Why the 1982 and 1986 accounts do not line up
The book excerpt says Soman did not make the cut for the 1982 Asian Games. In a November 2024 interview with Anandabazar Patrika, however, Soman says he participated in the 1982 Delhi Asian Games. Asked about not representing India in 1986, he mentions a combination of reasons and “some complications.” The interview does not establish a specific explanation for what prevented him from representing India.
These retrospective accounts conflict on 1982 participation and differ in how they describe the path to 1986. The available accounts do not settle the discrepancy, and neither should be silently combined with the other. Read the November 2024 interview.

The wider swimming story in Keep Moving
A separate excerpt from the book, republished by The Times of India, describes Soman’s early training: he says he spent at least two hours in the pool each day and won a silver medal at the national championships in the under-11 category less than a year after learning to swim. He recalls, “I would not stop swimming for the next 14 years.” These are also his recollections in the book, rather than independently audited sporting records. The Times of India excerpt offers that earlier background.
For the broader context of the book and its authors, Harper’s Bazaar India interviewed the Somans in June 2024.
