The dispute over its use of the names Bhola and Shankar turned on whether those code names were historically documented: a January 2000 statement by India’s Union Home Minister, as reproduced in contemporaneous reporting, records them among the names passengers heard the hijackers use. Netflix India later said it updated the series’ opening disclaimer to include the hijackers’ real and code names.
What is Netflix’s IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack about?
Netflix lists IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack as a 2024 limited series with six episodes. Created by Anubhav Sinha and Trishant Shrivastava, it stars Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur and Vijay Varma, among others. Its episodes follow the hijacking, the officials’ response, negotiations and the aircraft’s eventual landing in Kandahar. Netflix’s series listing describes the aviation crisis and its cast and episodes.
The series was adapted from Flight into Fear: A Captain’s Story, by Captain Devi Sharan and Srinjoy Chowdhury. Netflix describes the screen version as a fictionalized, dramatized retelling inspired by the real event. That distinction matters: the series depicts a historical crisis, but its scenes and dialogue are not, by themselves, documentary evidence of exactly what happened. Netflix Tudum’s account of the series identifies the book and the adaptation.
What happened to flight IC 814 in 1999?
Indian Airlines flight IC 814 departed Kathmandu on December 24, 1999. Hijackers seized the aircraft, which made unplanned stops in Amritsar, Lahore and Dubai before reaching Kandahar, then under Taliban rule. Netflix’s account describes the hijacking as lasting seven days. These facts provide the historical frame for the series; they do not establish that every dramatic detail on screen is a literal reconstruction. Netflix Tudum’s historical overview recounts the route and duration.
Did Netflix change the hijackers’ names?
The controversy focused on the use of Bhola and Shankar in the series. Some viewers objected that using those names could mislead audiences about the hijackers’ identities. That objection should be distinguished from evidence of the names’ historical use: reporting on the Union Home Minister’s January 6, 2000 statement reproduces a passage saying passengers came to know the hijackers by five names they used among themselves.
The statement, as quoted by NDTV and Hindustan Times, identifies the hijackers as Ibrahim Athar, Shahid Akhtar Sayed, Sunny Ahmed Qazi, Mistri Zahoor Ibrahim and Shakir. It says passengers heard them addressed respectively as Chief, Doctor, Burger, Bhola and Shankar. The reproduced sentence reads: “To the passengers of the hijacked place these hijackers came to be known respectively as (1) Chief, (2) Doctor, (3) Burger, (4) Bhola and (5) Shankar, the names by which the hijackers invariably addressed one another.” NDTV’s report and Hindustan Times’ coverage reproduce the alias passage.

The original Ministry of External Affairs page linked in the reporting was unavailable for direct retrieval in the cited coverage, so the quotation here is attributed to those reports reproducing the Home Minister’s statement. The contemporaneous record supports that these aliases were documented; it does not, on its own, establish the filmmakers’ intent or settle how viewers should interpret the series’ portrayal.
What did Netflix do after the dispute?
Netflix India said it updated the opening disclaimer to include the hijackers’ real and code names. In a statement attributed to Monika Shergill, vice-president of content at Netflix India, the company said: “For the benefit of audiences unfamiliar with the 1999 hijacking of the Indian Airlines flight 814, the opening disclaimer has been updated to include the real and code names of the hijackers. The code names in the series reflect those used during the actual event. India has a rich culture of story-telling and we are committed to showcasing these stories and their authentic representation”. Public TV English reported Netflix India’s statement. It is the company’s account of the update; it does not independently verify how every regional version currently displays the disclaimer.
