LEGO Technic McLaren P1 set 42172 is a 1:8-scale, 3,893-piece adult building and display model. LEGO unveiled it at the McLaren Technology Centre in July 2024 and announced retail availability from 1 August 2024. Those facts describe the set’s launch; they do not establish that a particular writer built it at the centre. Whether it belongs on your shelf depends on your interest in the McLaren P1, Technic mechanisms and a large display model—not on a universal claim that it is a must-buy.
What is LEGO Technic McLaren P1 set 42172?
Set 42172 is LEGO’s 1:8-scale Technic model of the McLaren P1, rated for ages 18 and up. LEGO lists 3,893 pieces. It is presented as an adult building project and display model, rather than a small play-scale car. LEGO’s US product page lists the model; LEGO’s 10 July 2024 announcement gives its launch details.
How large is the finished model?
LEGO gives the model’s dimensions as 59 cm long, 25 cm wide and 14 cm high. Those measurements make it worth checking shelf or cabinet space before buying, particularly if you want to display it with room around the bodywork.

The doors received particular attention in the design process. LEGO designer Kasper Rene Hansen said the team tested multiple car variations and had to develop a new mechanism to keep the butterfly-style doors open. That is a useful detail for buyers interested in how Technic mechanisms solve a display-model challenge, not a guarantee about long-term durability.
When and where was it launched?
LEGO and McLaren unveiled the set at the McLaren Technology Centre in July 2024. LEGO announced that retail availability would begin on 1 August 2024. The launch venue is part of the collaboration’s story; it should not be confused with evidence that an individual reviewer built or tested the retail set there.

Is the LEGO Technic McLaren P1 worth buying?
There is no single answer independent of what you want from a set. The published specifications make it a plausible choice for an adult who wants a substantial McLaren P1 display model and values mechanical features such as the gearbox, suspension and piston engine. Its 3,893-piece count and 59 cm length also mean it calls for a meaningful commitment of space and budget.

The official product information does not establish a typical build time, independent difficulty rating, buyer-satisfaction result or a comparative verdict against other large Technic sets.

Don’t confuse set 42172 with the life-size McLaren P1
A separate project reported by LEGO in September 2024 produced a drivable, life-size Technic McLaren P1. LEGO says that project used 342,817 Technic elements and took 8,344 hours of development and construction. It weighed approximately 1,220 kg and completed a 5.891 km lap of Silverstone with McLaren F1 driver Lando Norris. These are figures for the life-size project, not for the 3,893-piece retail set. LEGO’s account of the Silverstone project describes that separate build.
