Scroll’s August 1, 2025, interview summary says Devdutt Pattanaik faced censure from Brahmins for writing about Hindu scriptures as a non-Brahmin. The page does not identify who criticized him, where the encounter happened, or when. It reports his account in a broad conversation about mythology—not a separately reported investigation into a named institution.
What did Devdutt Pattanaik say about Brahmin censure?
Scroll’s published summary states: “Pattanaik says that he faced censure from Brahmins for writing about Hindu scriptures as a non-Brahmin.” That wording is Scroll’s account of the interview, not a verified transcript quotation from Pattanaik. Read the Scroll Adda interview page.
The page does not provide the exact exchange or identify the people involved. It also does not establish what “Brahmin-only space” refers to, or give a chronology of the reported censure. The headline’s framing should therefore not be treated as proof of a particular venue, organization, or wider pattern.
What else does the Scroll interview cover?
Scroll describes the conversation as a discussion of how and why Pattanaik writes about mythology. Its summary says he distinguishes myth from fiction and presents myth as something that can be understood as an operating system for humans. Scroll also says the interview discusses his experience growing up gay and how it informed his perspective on mythology. These are topics attributed to the page’s summary; the page does not provide a transcript for checking the full wording or context.

What can—and cannot—be concluded from the account?
The interview summary documents that Pattanaik described facing censure over writing about Hindu scriptures as a non-Brahmin. By itself, it does not verify the circumstances of a specific encounter or show whether the experience was isolated or part of a broader pattern. It is not a basis for generalizing about Brahmins, Hindu readers, or religious institutions.

An earlier interview reproduced on Pattanaik’s website offers a separate view of his subject: “No culture exists without mythology.” The sentence appeared in a Deccan Herald interview published January 18, 2015; it is a broad statement about mythology, not a comment on caste or the later Scroll conversation. Read the reproduced interview.
