A transparent maxi, a sheer slip dress, or a see-through top can all create the “naked dress” effect; a bodysuit or coordinated lingerie can make the underlayer part of the look. The practical starting point is to choose the garment, coverage, and occasion that feel comfortable to you.
What the naked-dress trend means
“Naked dress” describes a family of sheer or barely-there silhouettes, not one fixed design. Some garments reveal skin directly; others make a bodysuit, bra, or underwear set a visible part of the outfit. Vogue used the phrase for its July 2023 styling guide, while its December 2024 coverage described sheer or barely-there dresses as a major Hollywood red-carpet look.
The trend also appeared in coverage of the 2025 Oscars after-parties. In an Associated Press report published March 3, 2025, InStyle Fashion features director Madeline Hirsch said: “Though it originated on the runway, the naked dress trend is fed largely by celebrity red carpet moments — stars and their stylists can’t seem to get enough.” AP reported that Hirsch identified sheer lace as the trend’s most prominent expression that year. These are dated accounts; they do not establish how prevalent the look is in 2026.
Choose the version that suits your comfort and occasion
Transparency, silhouette, and underlayers are choices, not rules. These combinations are documented styling approaches, not guarantees that a particular design will suit every body or setting.

Pick a garment before choosing the underlayer
Start with the dress shape
A lightweight sheer mesh maxi makes transparency the central feature. A sheer slip can be styled as an evening look or, as Vogue notes, used as a beach cover-up. Sheer minidresses offer a shorter silhouette, while embellished or chainmail-inspired garments add texture and visual detail. These are examples of different design directions, not a ranking or a claim that one is universally easier to wear.
Decide how much of the underlayer should show
A bodysuit gives a different effect from a coordinated bra-and-underwear set: one reads more like a continuous base layer, while the other makes lingerie an intentional visual element. You can also choose a sheer top instead of a full dress and pair it with a more covering bottom. Decide on the coverage you want first, then select pieces that work together.

Check the setting and season
Consider where you will wear the outfit and whether the fabric and coverage make sense for that setting. Vogue presented a sheer top as a more seasonally appropriate and demure entry point than a full transparent dress. That is an editorial example, not a universal rule about seasons or dress codes.
Make comfort part of the styling decision
Actor Florence Pugh told Vogue: “If you feel comfortable, and the clothing allows you to feel comfortable, it’s like a little present that you get to have. As well as the dress being on you, it’s also your body underneath.” The useful takeaway is to treat comfort as part of the outfit decision, not an afterthought. If a transparent dress feels like too much, try a sheer top, a more substantial underlayer, or a less transparent fabric instead.

What the evidence can—and cannot—say
Vogue’s 2023 guide is useful for garment and styling examples; its 2024 coverage describes the red-carpet look at that time. British Vogue’s April 30, 2024 article documents specific dress-and-layer combinations. AP’s March 3, 2025 report covers that year’s Oscars after-parties and Hirsch’s assessment of the trend. Together, these sources show the look appearing in fashion and celebrity coverage through 2025. They do not provide a measured prevalence statistic or establish its popularity in October 2026.
The title’s “I tried” wording would imply a personal try-on and firsthand judgments about fit, comfort, or reactions. No such experience is established here, so this guide does not present one as fact.
